About this product

Product Information

The second film (fitting between THE IPCRESS FILE and THE BILLION DOLLAR BRAIN) starring Michael Caine as Len Deighton's super spy Harry Palmer is characterized by lush photography and smooth period style. In this outing, Palmer, choosing to spy for the Queen in place of doing time in prison, is sent to Berlin to assist Soviet Colonel Stok (Oscar Homolka), the head of security for the Berlin Wall who wishes to defect to the West. Palmer arranges for Stok to cross the border in a coffin, but things unfortunately don't go as planned.

    • Funeral in Berlin

In my opinion "Funeral in Berlin" is Michael Caine's best spy movie. However for background you should see the first film in the Harry Palmer series "The Ipcress File" which is also excellent. You can take or leave "Billion Dollar Brain" which attempted to be a 007 copy and fell short.

    • The classic spy novel portrayed on film. With Michael Caine as a lovable anti-hero!

Great movie adaptation from the book by Len Deighton. Michael Caine is wonderful as Harry Palmer – a reluctant spy avoiding military prison. This is the character first established in the Ipcress File. Seeing Berlin – both East and West – in the 1960s is a treat. The twists of the plot are initially difficult to follow – you probably will want to watch it at least twice. Very worthwhile!

    • Top-Notch Cold War Spy Thriller

While not a total masterpiece like its predecessor 'The Ipcress File,' 'Funeral in Berlin' remains a top-notch Cold War spy thriller with another outstanding performance by Michael Caine as working class spy with high class tastes Harry Palmer.

    • Cold war spy thriller

I was in the US Army in Berlin Brigade 1964 - 1966. Good use of locations and not too far off from the kind of events that went on in the 60s.
