Deserves a listen --- represents a time and place -- the late 60's....
Forever changes was unheralded when it was released in 1967 (it was at approximately the same time as Sgt. Peppers was released). There was lots of great music at that time and place. I was still listening to Aftermath by the Stones at the time! Forever changes was totally overlooked --- although I remember hearing "Alone again, or" on an 8 track tape while car cruising with a high school classmate. I didn't know its song title or album it came from for several years. Probably because of limited airplay on top 40, or the lack of listening popularity of early incantations of "underground" radio stations in the San Francisco Bay Area. They must have played songs from this album, but I totally missed it. The leader of Love was the enigmatic Arthur Lee. He was a black guy who was ... Talk about far out! He had a sweet voice, but the personally of a manipulative, sometimes violent, inner LA city thug. He eventually did hard prison time for a weapons violation and accumulated assault and drug charges. You wouldn't know Forever Changes by Love’s two minor hits, "My Little Red Book" or "7 and 7" is. Arthur Lee sings with so much more sweetness and melody in Forever Changes. Some of the strange song titles predate Prince by 15 years! Does it deserve to be rated in the top 10 albums of the decade? Maybe --- I listened to other albums from that era much, much more. Early Kinks, Yardbirds, Stones, Beatles, Ten Years After, Fleetwood Mac (with Peter Green) and Led Zep were all on my turn table then. Was Love prevented from hitting the big time because Arthur Lee was so weird about touring and working with his band? The lack of Elektra (Love's label)lack of promotion? Or was the horrendous drug usage within the band that that foiled their rise to the top? Probably, all of the above. I gotta say that this is a good album. I can't rate it as great as some critics, but they may be influenced more by the romanticism of the lack of pop success. The greatest undiscovered rock band from the 60's. Not exactly a garage band because they had a big label behind them. But everyone seems to love an underdog. The album deserves a listen and I have listened and enjoyed it more now that when it first came out in 1967.
