The outbreak of WW1 in 1914 found the British Army unready in many respects for a new age of warfare. However, the British led the world in the personal equipment worn by the infantryman thanks to an American officer named Anson Mills and the skills of the company created to produce his design - the 1908 equipment set made in woven cotton web. By the outbreak of WW2, the British infantry had new 1937 pattern equipment, whose design reflected a new generation of weapons and tactics. This proved unequal to the special demands of jungle warfare in the Far East: so 1944 saw yet another set of kit. In this book the author offers collectors and students of militaria a detailed review of these infantry equipments which spanned the British soldier's combat experience throughout most of the 20th century.

A New Look at Old Field Gear
At last, a great leap forward in reference materials for the study of British web equipment! Light years ahead of the previously available publications, it is most distinguished by its detailed chronological organization of the development of the various changes and upgrades, sparing use of old familiar line drawings and black and white photographs, and generous distribution of newly taken large format full color plates of not only the individual equipment items themselves, but also as they are assembled into their full kits. This publication would certainly appeal to the novice collector as well as the advanced researcher, by the wide range of coverage and specific listings of official British 'List of Changes' numbers for the various models. With the realization that there is never ... At last, a great leap forward in reference materials for the study of British web equipment! Light years ahead of the previously available publications, it is most distinguished by its detailed chronological organization of the development of the various changes and upgrades, sparing use of old familiar line drawings and black and white photographs, and generous distribution of newly taken large format full color plates of not only the individual equipment items themselves, but also as they are assembled into their full kits. This publication would certainly appeal to the novice collector as well as the advanced researcher, by the wide range of coverage and specific listings of official British 'List of Changes' numbers for the various models. With the realization that there is never enough information in any reference material, only a few minor criticisms could be levied. The P08 section does not provide coverage of some of the more obscure and exotic equipment items, such as the belt pouch for the Grenade Discharger Cup. The P14 equipment set, which comprises a combination of both web and leather components, was not covered at all. The RN and RAF interwar P19 and P28 equipment sets were rather too briefly touched upon, and the proliferation of the P37 type equipment usage by numerous other countries (and as modified to suit their own needs) was not addressed at all. My own personal favorite section, however, was comprehensive coverage of the heretofore little understood P44 web equipment. Having shown up on the US collector market in intermittent dribs and drabs to date, this information is sure to be of value whenever more of the P44 equipment becomes available. Overall, this is a truly outstanding and beautifully illustrated study which is sure to prove a valuable resource for old hand and novice alike! A 'must have' reference!!
