I'm totally impressed by this man's life. He should be held up as an example for all the black community to admire. His views are amazing considering this was written 117 years ago! I'm highly recommending this book to all my friends

Booker T. Washington's autobiography, UP FROM SLAVERY, is an uplifting first person account of a former slave who played a major role in the America emerging after the Civil War. Booker T. Washington's experiences and those of others which he shares with his readers, pull the reader into a world full of hope & pain & drudgery & uncertainty that only an abiding faith in a Higher Power's color blind benevolent justice could justify. Nevertheless, Booker T. Washinton's autobiography can at times seem almost too good natured and brimming with well wishes from admirers. Was he deliberately missled about some things, people, & events? Perhaps. Question: How could there have been a Civil Rights struggle without men & women like him, who probably worked themselves into their early graves just ... Booker T. Washington certainly wasn't the first and only former Negro slave who simply accepted reality on its' own terms and worked with the materials he found nearby or that he could acquire: be it crops, land, lumber, people, education, money, or anything else. How else did any our 13th Amendment emancipated ancestors psychologically, economically, physically travel up from slavery? In this sense, Booker T. Washington's autobiography can at times pull his readers back into the understanding, yet firm long gone great or great, or great grand parent's presence. Mr. Washinton never loses his sense of connection to his origins and his purpose for the autobiography. We even mentally travel with him in his almost tireless pursuit of funds to help build & keep the university he helped found open. He did the best he could with whatever he was given and could find. His writing, and the voice that emerges through it advises, and enables, his readers to do the same.
