      Notorious flop gets super transfer but lacks extras.....

      Excellent transfer on the blu-ray but for this being such a notorious flop and hated film I was little bit let down that no film critics or scholars did an audio commentary track or documentary for this release. You get a couple interviews on the second disc but for this being CRITERION think they would beef up the extras. Instead they sank their efforts into the transfer and restoration.

      Not a disaster, not a classic but enjoyable

      This film is not the disaster is has been accused of being. It is slow in parts and could have maybe a half hour shaved off but many of the scenes are breathtakingly beautiful,especially on thie bluray release

      It's like ballin in the Champagne room watching these Criterion dvd's

      This is a really good film. It is definitely an epic in scope, scenery and length. There are great performances throughout the film with the brilliant jilted love triangle played by Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, and Isabelle Huppert. The dynamic between these 3 principla players is great. The film is marvelously shot and it really shows in the blu-ray edition. It seems like the only really intended way to go at this dvd is through the Criterion version. I have read and heard that the other versions of the dvd don't really do it justice. The reality of the matter is that nobody treats and does a better job of films like this better than Criterion. A great film that is just an amazing Criterion work.

      Cimino's White Whale

      I remember watching this movie in 1980 with a friend who was directing projects with AFI. We were at first slack-jawed at the audacious banality, weight and overindulgence of Cimino's direction. Then we began laughing as it projected a surreal dimension of ponderous, overarching, auteurish excess. This disaster destroyed United Artists and had the studios putting the clamps on director driven movies for years. And rightfully so. The production was so long and tedious that John Hurt was able to squeeze in Elephant Man for David Lynch while he was waiting for his scenes. The legendary consumption of cocaine by cast and crew couldn't have helped matters. I defy anyone to sit through the original cut of this film without throwing stuff at the screen. You have been warned.
