1888 gegründet, entwickelten die Brüder Holder im schwäbischen Urach in ihrer Maschinenwerkstatt die erste selbsttätige Pflanzenschutzmaschine der Welt und etablierten sich rasch als Spezialisten für Sprühund Pflanzenschutzgeräte sowie Fräsen und Hacken. Ein weiterer Geniestreich der Geschwister bestand in der Einführung des Einachsschleppers, jener kleinen Landmaschine, die in vielen Kleinbetrieben das Pferd ersetzte. Holderprodukte waren sehr preisgünstig und genossen zudem den Ruf unverwüstlich zu sein. In den folgenden Jahrzehnten baute Holder seine Stellung als führender Anbieter von Schmalspurschleppern für schwierige Hanglagen weiter aus.
