    Replacement gears that work perfectly!

If you have a LifeLike Proto 2000 (pre-Walthers) chances are it’ll need axle gears if they haven’t already been replaced. Many times the loco will still operate, but it won’t be silent running. Extreme cases will cause the loco to hop around and even derail itself! Do t worry as this is an easy fix! With your loco inverted, pop off the snap-on cover for each truck. Take out all the assemblies, remove the old gears, and toss them. Now, take the new gears and, after cleaning the wheel and bearing, start to reassemble. Do NOT forget the square bearing piece!! If you don’t have a tool to measure proper wheel width, use two Exacto knife blades as spacers. Place the blade against the back of the wheel so the bearing can’t slide all the way down because the blade is in the way. Assemble ...

  • Great replacement axle gears

These are high quality axle gears and not only do they work for certain Athearn models but also other brands such as certain Proto 2000 models. They make a great replacement for the poor quality axle gears that come in some GP30's and GP9's. They are easy to install and provide for a long running life. The material is delron and it is very durable.

  • A must for replacing the split drive gears on Lifelike and Walthers locomotives.

They are very strong and durable. However, they don't push on easily. I have found it best to use a slightly larger drill bit than the axle and by hand make a slight bevel in the ends. I press them on with a small clamp.

  • Very good answer to a problem.

It depends on the application, I put these on 20-year-old new Proto 2000 GP7s due to all the originals being cracked. I had to use a #42 drill bit to open them up in order to install. Good luck and we should be fortunate that there is a replacement available.

  • Athearn vs A line

Athrarn's gear is about .040 inches longer than A Line. Doesn't cause space problems with axel bearings in trucks. I had to remove the A line gear and buy athearns for my proto RS 2
