A Proto-Stooges Curio
If you're looking for the usual Three Stooges hilarity, look elsewhere. This is mostly a Ted Healy movie featuring a few bits with Moe, Larry and Shemp. It's of interest because it was made before Curly joined the act and before the long string of Columbia shorts began. It really shows what the team was like before Jules White added his comedy talents, polishing the act into the classic style we all remember the Stooges for today. If you're looking for the usual Three Stooges hilarity, look elsewhere. This is mostly a Ted Healy movie featuring a few bits with Moe, Larry and Shemp. Violence threatened against Ted Healy`s girl-friend is like Jackie Gleason when Gleason says "To the Moon!" when he threatens Audrey Meadows in those old Jackie Gleason shows. I still felt that Healy is nasty and wondered about the humor back then. Little wierd guy that is supposed to be a clown only comes up and bothers Healy, which Healy rebuffs him and tells the guy to get lost every time. This must have been a funny gag back then.Stooges are not featured very much in this -only about 15-20 minutes with them is featured. this dvd is essential for any mildly interested three stooges fan...you'll see larry at the age of 28...moe and shemp in their early thirties..all the while keep in mind that talking pictures were less than five years old. you'll also note that all of the hitting in the movie was done by the abusive, on and off the screen, ted healy. ted exploited the trio, according to history. this flick is so old ,moe is credited as harry howard....for those on the fringe of stooges history, it should be noted that shemp was before curly and left only to persue a acting career on stage and screen. Soup to Nuts is a Three Stooges film before there were Three Stooges. It was their success with this that encouraged the trio to continue with the antics. Of special note is the writer, Rube Goldberg of zany overly complex inventions fame. In fact, a major element in the film is a character who builds such contraptions. Oddly, there's minor subculture developing who hold Rube Goldberg fests and compete for the most complicated and entertaining invention. Google Rube Goldberg if you want to get in on the fun. The film? Best for the twelve-year old set, who roll on the rug and watch it over and over.
