The beginning of the end for the Fourth Doctor...
As the 1981 season of Doctor Who came to an end, it was announced that actor Tom Baker (playing the fourth iteration of the Doctor) would not return for another season. Of course, this meant another Doctor would have to be found, and Tom's iteration of the character would have to somehow be forced to regenerate into the new actor. What resulted, however, was positively epic. The Keeper of Traken is literally part 1 of a 3 part storyline, focusing on the return of familiar Who villain the Master and the eventual regeneration of the fourth Doctor. This serial features the Doctor and companion Adric answering a distress call to the planet of Traken, from the titular keeper of this planet. Once there, they find that the Keeper's time is limited in this world, and he wishes for the Doctor to ... However, there's a strange living statue trying it's best to interfere with this... and there's a strange feeling that the Doctor just can't quite shake - that something familiar is watching him. The writing for this adventure is pretty good, and the true villain isn't exactly expected, unless you're already well-versed in Who lore. Tom Baker is great in his role as the Doctor, as is Matther Waterhouse as Adric. Additionally, this serial introduces the new companion Nyssa to the show, slowly building up the cast for the big finale of the season. While the serial borders on the ridiculous at times, be it acting or writing, the adventure as a whole is pretty enjoyable overall. Especially with the interesting ending, implying that things aren't quite over yet... This release is rounded out with the traditional Doctor Who bonuses. Audio commentary from the late Anthony Ainley (the Master), Sarah Sutton (Nyssa), Matt Waterhouse (Adric) and writer Johnny Byrne is a welcome bonus - and almost an hour of bonuses can otherwise be found. This includes a feature on the Return of the Master, as well as a 30-minute documentary on the filming of this serial. For those who are really into the music, there's even a music-only option on this disc, interestingly enough. If you're a Doctor Who fan, you probably already own this. It's praised as part one of (one of) the best Who adventures in the classic series - and it really deserves it to a great extent. However, cash may well be better spent on the larger release of 'New Beginnings,' which collects this and the other two 'parts' in one large set.

Manufacturing problem with "disc burning"
The Keeper of Traken is a great story. My only problem with this particular title is that the manufacturer made a serious flop with the "burning" of these discs. This title disc is funny when it comes to actually playing, or not. DVD players will generally not recognise the disc and it will only display as "no disc", and/or skip and freeze completely. By luck I was only able to watch it on my PC. I am not the only one to experience this as I have seen similar posts elsewhere. I've notified the manufacturer more than once, my best efforts did not avail. The story I give 5 stars, the actual use of the disc, zero(one star because I was forced).The Keeper of Traken is a great story. Excellent for anyone interested in Doctor Who.
Excellent story in the history of 'Doctor Who'. It was one of the most polished productions in the Tom Baker series both audibly and visually; and ,also, story wise and acting wise.The DVD contains some good extras too. I bought the DVD because I had grown up watching the Tom Baker and Peter Davison series and this was one of my favorite stories. A must see for every 'Doctor Who' fan.
