I bought the knob for my 2011 BMW E70. While the ring slips right on, I had to break all the mounting tabs on the underside of the top part and then glue it to stay on. I guess the X5 uses a different idrive controller.

The part arrived intact. If you buy it, absolutely check if all the valve-body bolts and solenoid-pack bolts are torqued to spec. My unit came with the solenoid pack assembled to the valve-body, but not torqued down at all. Presume its not ready for installation .upon arrival, prior to checking it.
The valve body is reconditioned, not new, contrary to the add (see photo). The valve-body has plenty of heat stress cracks. see photos. Shop instead at World Wide Specialty Parts, in Ohio.
