Velveteen Rabbit not so smooth
I decided to buy this before we ever saw it because it's so expensive to go the movies, and I figured that there wouldn't be the type of special effects that really need the big screen to be appreciated anyhow. Which was true. This story has been seriously altered, partly I think to make it longer and partly to add dramatic tension. Well, it WAS a children's story, but now it's a bit too "dramatic" for the 2 year old for whom I bought it. Here's the story: Little boy's mother dies, father can't stand the kid, father's rigid mother takes kid in, boy finds Dad's old toys in attic, boy creates fantasy world (displayed in cartoon mode), and then it gets really psychological. While the grandmother does loosen up, the father behaves hatefully toward his child until child nearly dies. Then ... I decided to buy this before we ever saw it because it's so expensive to go the movies, and I figured that there wouldn't be the type of special effects that really need the big screen to be appreciated anyhow. But the scenes that are too intense for young ones include possibly the one where the boy loses his rabbit temporarily, and definitely the one where his fantasy world burns. Also at the end the rabbit has to actively escape the bonfire in order to survive, as his little caregiver is panicking while looking on. So, although the movie got a lot of hype, the storyline was not actually enhanced from the original, and you do not want to use this as a bedtime relaxer for toddlers or young children. Well, not for any children. OK, I'm 52 and I never want to see it again!

The Velveteen Rabbit
It is an extremely good children's film that is live action and animation combined. A little boy is sent to stay with his not too friendly grandmother over the Christmas holidays and there he discovers a magical attic where the toys come to life when he plays with them. A story about how imagination, companionship and the love of a toy can change a boy and his family. My 7 year old granddaughter watched it 3 times in one day. I am getting this for her for Easter (although it is based around Christmas) to put into her Easter basket.It is an extremely good children's film that is live action and animation combined. A great movie for all ages.
Memorable. A great movie for animal, lovers and especially for dads to spend more time with their children. We don't stay little for ever. The day comes when one is not their hero anymore and their interests in life take them elsewhere.

A lesson on loving....
I love this movie! Having one parent that has difficulty showing emotions really made me relate to this movie! It has many lessons in it, like the importance of imagination, the importance of valuing something while you have it, and of course the main lesson of learning how to love. This boy goes from being loved by his mother, to being loved, or so he thinks, by no one. He teaches his grandmother and father how to open their hearts to love again!I love this movie! THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES EVER MADE!!!!!!!!! SHOWS WHAT TRUE LOVE CAN DO FOR A PERSON AND A FAMILY. WHAT CAN A CHILDS IMAGINATION UNLEASH IF IT'S BIG ENOUGH. SO MUCH LOVE THAT IT BRINGS A STUFFED RABBIT TO LIFE. THERE WAS NOTHING I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THIS MOVIE!!!!!!! TOBY SHOWED HIS NANA AND FATHER JUST WHAT CAN BE DONE IF YOU BELIEVE HARD ENOUGH. I'D GIVE THIS MOVIE 15 STARS. ACTING WAS SUPERB BY ALL BUT ESPECIALY TOBY. I'VE BOUGHT 3 OF THESE IN CASE ONE GETS BROKE OR USED TO MUCH.THE KIDS LIKE THE COLORING BOOK THAT COMES WITH CERTAIN ONES.
