About this product

Product Information

The Nikon Speedlight SB-24 Flash boasts a bundle of features that will enhance the 35-millimeter photographs of any camera buff. Flash photography can require some time to search and develop skills to get just right, but Nikon makes it easier with the SB-24. You can let the equipment do the work with its auto settings or make your own decisions with the manual controls. With the bounce head, swivel head, and TTL flash control, you can get the right illumination in the right place. The Nikon SB-24 can be mounted on your camera through its shoe mount, or it can be used remotely. Its dimensions are 3.1 inches by 5.1 inches by 3.9 inches. This is a very sturdy piece of gear that weighs 13.7 ounces without the batteries. You have the choice of using AA alkaline batteries, AA NiCd batteries, or an SD-7 battery pack for power. The Nikon Speedlight has a flash range from 2 through 65 feet and a guide number of 118 feet at ISO 100.A look at the rear panel controls on this Nikon accessory will give you a good idea of everything that it can do. First, you can choose whether to have the flash sync with the front or rear curtain when it is mounted on the camera. This choice is particularly important when the subject of your photo is moving. Then, you pick your shooting mode. The auto-exposure mode uses the built-in flash meter to set the exposure for you. There is also a manual setting that gives you full control. Multiple flash mode produces a strobe effect, and the TTL selection uses the camera’s through-the-lens meter for automatic exposure setting. The Nikon Speedlight lets you choose between matrix and center-weighted metering, and you can change the power level of the flash from full power to one-sixth strength. You can have further manual control over the light reaching the lens by setting the aperture from f/20 to f/11. Once you have the amount of light set, you can decide where to direct it. The bounce head on this Nikon accessory has a range from minus 7 degrees below horizontal to 90 degrees above. The swivel head rotates clockwise from minus 270 degrees to 180 degrees. All the settings that are in effect when you start to shoot will be shown on the built-in LCD display on this Nikon flash. It can tell you whether you are in auto, manual, strobe, or TTL mode. It displays the film speed, strobe frequency, and flash-covering distance. It will also let you know the zoom indicator, the aperture setting, and whether you have adjusted the power output. In dim lighting, you can illuminate the display with the indigo backlight, so you will never need to guess about which settings are operating. If you need more light than one Nikon Speedlight SB-24 can provide, you can combine it with other flashes. It can sync with as many as four other flash devices. You can also add a wireless controller to your system. This will allow your flash to use its infrared beam to communicate wirelessly with other devices.

    Basic, simple...

Perfect for what I use a strobe for. Manual OFF camera fired via trigger. Some call it "strobist" I dunno.. Pretty good on the hot shoe too when you need it as the head swivels straight up and 180 side to side, left to right. Bounce anywhere... Great flash for cheap if you don't need/use all the iTTL auto.

  • SB-24

For starters, I am a professional photographer. Although the SB-24 does not TTL with DSLR cameras, it works great as a manual flash. They are cheap and easy to come by. I trigger mine with pocket wizard remotes, but most less expensive triggers will work. (some at the expense of reliability) The newer SB-26 has a built in slave feature, but the price is a bit more. Pros: cheap, reliable, manual features, durable cons: no DSLR TTL, manual only goes down to 1/16 (although you can stop it down with gels) All in all a great flash for getting the light off the camera. Shoot through an umbrella and you have a great portable lighting solution. You can find more info online. I think the best source is David Hobby's strobist blog.

  • @$60ish/? a bit more,'HomerunFlash' you'll KEEP. BEST4 MultiFlashSetups

No matter how many aftermarket flashes out there, NOTHING compares to Nikon's Speedlight OEM's- Even Older Ones. The SB24 is a great, **Fully Functional with Nikon's Digital systems, Strobe Flash / Slave Flash, Primary Flash, for those in need of A. just less expensive options(Consider a $20 flash that breaks 1 month after purchase, when you ponder costs). B. It is a fully functional Optical Slave Flash-To ANY other brand Flash that works properly. When combined with any other multi flash setups, its great.(btw the SB24 is 1 of only a few with Optical trigger) It is fully adjustable with an LCD thats viewable, to 1/128th power, it supports Nikons FP strobe feature and fires at higher sync speeds 320+, has bot PC and 3 prone Tether connects, & 3prong aux power source. Full Stroboscopic ...

  • Nikon quality for a fantastic price!

I recently purchased a Nikon N6006 camera. While reading the instructions they mentioned several flash units this being the most recent at that time period. I looked at the SB-22 and SB-23 and decided that this unit would mate well with my camera. The unit is a quality piece of photo equiptment built solid compared to a modern dslr flash units. I purchased this particular unit because of its ttl features and how it should work with the cameras matrix metering system. I haven't processed any film taken with the flash, but i know it has to be an improvement over the units built in flash which i have tried. I've been out of the photography loop for a while but i think with this flash unit in my arsenal i'm well on the way to getting back in the saddle. Because of the wide spread use of ...

  • Best Bang for your Buck

If you follow the strobist blog (and if you're serious about photography, even as a hobby, you should), then this is the perfect flash for you. Lots of power (relatively), great battery life, decent recovery time, but best of all, perfect price. You can expect to pay between $65 and $80 for one of these flashes, and it has almost all the functionality of the $160 LumoPro 160 flash (which itself has almost all the functionality of the $440 Nikon SB-800). Don't buy this if you want automatic flash exposures done with an on-camera flash. You're much better off buying the $125 SB-400 for that. These are the perfect candidate for manual, portable, off-camera flashes that will be modified in some way (umbrella, snoot, grid, omni-bounce, etc.). Pro: Portable Good Battery Life Decent power / ...
