By the time this band (formed in Chicago in '65 by vocalist/harpist Paul Butterfield) released their last Elektra album in 1971, they had amassed one of the most vital new blues catalogs in music, as well as launching the careers of future stars Michael Bloomfield, Elvin Bishop and David Sanborn. This 2-CD anthology features 37 of the group's best, including classics like "Born in Chicago," "The Loving Cup" and "Shake Your Money Maker." the set also contains more than 15 cuts making their CD debut!

anthology-paul butterfield

This is the Elektra Years of a groundbreaking band
This two CD set has material with a wide range of appeal. I bought it mainly ofr Paul's excellent harmonica playing, but there is a great deal of contrast between the main two band lineups that are recorded. One is very guitar based with excellent guitar from Elvin Bishop and Bloomfield, with Paul Butterfield's stinging harmonica. The other set is more of a blues/jazz sound with horns and the harmonica is often times so far in the background it practically gets lost in the mix. It is still a good look at an innovator that has rarely received his just due for what he accomplished. My only complaint is that it does not have as many solos of Paul Butterfield on the CD which is what I wanted more of.This two CD set has material with a wide range of appeal.
