TINTIN AND ALPHA-ART is a collection of the unfinished artwork that Herge', the creator of Tintin sketched for what would have been Tintin's twenty fourth collected adventure. This book memorializes and honors Herge' and his most popular creation, by translating his original notes for the book into English, and showing his accompanying sketches for what was to become the final work before his untimely death. The authors of the book are quite successful in translating his writing from the original Belgian language used by Herge', into an intriguing and entertaining narrative. Their interpretation is sure to enthrall any true Tintin fan. This book will be understood more, and appreciated better, by the mature fan or scholar of Tintin than by his younger readers. It probably won't be very ... It probably won't be very exciting for, or fully appreciated by them. Herge's humor and perspicacity shine here despite being limited to simple pencil sketches. His keen eye for satire and irony is happily present in abundance. In ALPH-ART, he skewers the pomposity of modern art, society and artists, with some drug trafficking thrown in for spice. Tintin's usual supporting cast of characters are all here including Snowy, Captain Haddock,the Thom(p)sons,Professor Calculus,Nestor, Jolyon Wagg,Bianca Castafiore and even Cutts the butcher. The detailed and polished drawings that are always a highlight of his finished work are the only missing elements. The drawings included are rough black and white pencil sketches. Any hard core film student will easily recognize Herge's shorthand style here. It mimics the storyboard format used by moviemakers today throughout the world. While composition and character are also quite successfully hinted at in these sketches, this is not a book that the casual reader will enjoy. It doesn't contain all the finished and detailed work that has so charmed legions of Tintin fans. In only a few panels has Herge' drawn tantalizingly close-to-finished artwork that is almost ready to be inked. Potential comic artists among us however will be positively ecstatic over the way the drawings illustrate these early stages so necessary to the development of any successful graphic novel. I only have one real criticism of this book. Rather than reproduce Herge's artwork the same size as seen in the Tintin series(which is coincidently the same size as this book), the editors have chosen to reproduce most of his artwork in a smaller format. The reader can see it, but not necessarily study it closely. Presumably this allowed the editors/designers the opportunity of making their own artistic statement. They reproduce selected drawings of Herge's in a larger than life style throughout their pages as a decorative motif. This decorates their own book handsomely, but it does a disservice to any student of Herge's artwork by forcing his other art to be smaller than drawn. At this smaller scale, it is difficult for the serious art student of Herge's work to study his techniques very clearly. Any Tintin book is clearly better than no Tintin book, but this book truly deserves the attention of almost any fan. It is absolutely essential for any serious student of Tintin lore. It rewards the reader with an engrossing and amusing tale, while it also continues the story of our favorite characters. It's sudden ending is painfully & fittingly reminiscent of those cliffhangers familiar to very early Tintin readers, when his adventures were only available to them in periodical form.

good book.
good book. wrinkled a little through shipping. this is the only one in the Tintin series that is only a draft. The publisher published the book just by photocopying the draft by Herge, and adding English translations of the conversation using larger letters, along with the graphs.

Excellent. This book gives a wonderful insight into the writing process of the Tintin books and is a great story although not 100% complete. The story involves Tintins ongoing fight against drug smugglers. An excellent buy.
