A story about following one's dream and not someone else's

Great movie about the power of love, tolerance, overcoming inner conflicts in the face of gender stereotypes, social expectations, and being true to ones self. The setting is 1984 Northern England. The youngest of a coal miner’s two sons is expected to follow the family tradition of learning boxing, becoming a third generation successor to a pair of boxing gloves. During a boxing class in the school gymnasium, the young boy is captivated by the activities of a ballet class in session at the opposite end. This begins the story of a young boy’s passion for dance, prevailing over all obstacles to achieve his ultimate dream.

    too much unnecessary language

other than the unnecessary language this is a great movie. too bad i can not give it a 5 star for that reason because the language is what makes it family or not. take the language out and it's a 5 star all the way.

  • NOT the same as the musical you may have seen on Brdwy

This is a lovely film but if you've seen Billy Elliot the musical be aware that this is not it. This is a BBBC film, and the only dancing you'll see are two or three wonderful scenes with the young boy dancing. No singing. Much more serious and sombre than the musical, with a few bloody scenes that might upset younger children. For older children though it's a thoughtful and thought provoking movie with a happy/sad ending. I'd have wished for better closure, for instance, with the dance teacher, but again, remember this is not the musical but probably much closer to the original stage play. The lead is absolutely glorious, I can't imagine a better Billy. The sup[porting cast is equally amazing--the father, the teacher, etc. Not a bad performance in the bunch.

  • This Goes to My Top 100 Favorite Movie List!

It is rare that I can call a movie one of my favorite films of all times. BILLY ELLIOT has become one of those. There are many levels of this magnificent picture that make it excel: the portrayal of the extreme hardness of the coal miners who are going through one of the great modern-day crises in England; the difficulties families go through to keep themselves together as a unit no matter the hardship; and most of all, the anguish and humiliation people must sometimes endure in order to fulfill their dreams. This is about Billy Elliot, played by a boy (Jamie Bell, cast from out of over 2,000 boys auditioned in Northern England) who had never acted on film in his life. Bell carries the movie like a seasoned actor, and relates to the viewers Billy’s yearning to be a dancer without one ...

  • Impressive and inspiring

This is an inspiring film about a boy coming from a small coal mining town in Northern England who aspires to become a ballet dancer. As his father and brother struggle for their jobs admidst a strike among coal miners in their area, Billy secretly studies ballet with the help of their local ballet teacher Mrs Wilkinson (played by Julie Walters). Worries arise when his father discovers this - and the struggle that Billy goes through, going against all odds to fulfill his dream, is truly inspiring. I love the film for the moments that tug on your heartstrings. Billy's passion for dance - like the time he practices his pirouttes in the bath and that time that he dances off his frustration in the streets with the Jam's "This Town Called Malice" are memorable moments. I especially love the ...
