Audiophile mastering
John Mayall - Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton / Mfsl Gold CD Original Master Recording This review is for the mastering and the sound quality of thIs product only, not for the music itself. (The music deserves five stars too.) About the mastering: this classic blues-rock album was recorded and mixed on analogue equipment of course and published first in 1966 on monoaural LP in England. The stereo mix is applied for the later 1969 stereo LP release and this was created from the original 1966 mono mix. Mofi used the stereo mix for the master recording and I feel joyful for it and satisfied because I prefer listening rock music in stereo (where available). Some listener may say that is not correct because they consider the original mono mix to be authentic for a master recording release ... About the sound: Mofi did a great job here. The master tape research and restoration engineers succesfully saved the original warm and detailed analogue sound for the cd. The lead vocal went in red sometimes but this fault exsists on the master tape and still exists on the Mofi cd. So it's ok and it doesn't degrade the sound quality as it is the part of the original atmosphere - we should accept it. There's hard to find any sign of a digital intervention: the sound lacks the bad digital flavourings. Recommended. *****

Much more detail and clarity
I know the album well, I've been listening to it since 1967. Lately I have become re-obsessed with the "Beano Tone" and did a deep dive into available information. It was recommended to me to seek out this direct-from-master-tapes version of the album to highlight some facts about the recording. With careful listening it is possible to hear that the magic tone was very much influenced by the recording environment and in fact Clapton himself did not get this sound when playing live. There are live recordings to illustrate that as well. You can hear how the amp was pointed at the wall and covered with blankets to control the volume somewhat since Clapton refused to turn it down for the session. This is the sound we have come to revere. A lot of detail was inaudible on previous versions of ... I know the album well, I've been listening to it since 1967.
