I haven't read novels [in the past ten years] except for all of the Patrick O'Brian series. It was, unfortunately, like tripping on heroin. I started on those books and couldn't stop., Few, very few, books have made my heart thud with excitement. H.M.S. Surprise managed it. I read it cruising through the tame Adriatic, and several times found myself forced to pace about the deck to calm my pulse.... Patrick O'Brian's erudition is phenomenal, as is his capacity for creating another completely believable world. He convinces with his total accuracy even in tiny details.

    Near-perfect Condition

    I received a paperback copy of H.M.S. Surprise by Patrick O'Brian in near-perfect condition, with the spine and all pages intact, the coating on the covers (which has a tendency to peel) perfectly intact, and no blemishes except for a slight discolouration in one corner of the back cover. Altogether, a very good addition to a set of Aubrey-Maturins!

    Fun literary experience. Full of "Surprises" All puns intended

    I recommend this book series unreservedly. It is a fabulous adventure series. my heart starts racing during the excellently described battle scenes. you can smell the salt air and feel the wind on your face as you set sail with Capt Aubry and Dr. Maturin. It has a great amount of adventure spiced with just enough romance and humor all seasoned with suspense. Great for young and old alike.

    Avast whining! Prepare to engage the larboard battery. Fire as she bears!

    What do YOU do when you dog your watch? Are you guilty of skulking in the cable tiers or skylarking aloft? If you've a nautical bone in your body, you are not complete until you've immersed yourself in this series. The "Master and Commander" movie was based partly on this particular book. All of the books in that series and the movie itself bring to life 18th century navy life from a Royal Navy perspective. Every book in the series holds a valued position in my personal library. This particular book is among my most favorite.

    Third in the Aubrey/Maturin series

    Adventure on the high seas continues with the a commission on the H.M.S. Surprise. In the time of Iron Men and wooden ship. The Captain takes his aging frigate around the Cape of Good hope during a wild storm. Onward he sails into into the Indian ocean and high adventure. He has little hope for a worthy prize ship but A French Fleet lurks over the horizon, promising high drama and battles to come.
