Este volumen complementario al popular El alquimista de Coelho popular es un hand Íirido de un manual de autoayuda combinados con ficcion; una serie de aforismos establecidos dentro de parabolas. En la parabola, un chico conoce a una hermosa mujer en una playa, y comienza a contarle sobre un templo submarino escondido cerca de una isla desaparecida. El chico fracasa en su intento inicial por encontrar el templo, aunque escucha sus campanas, pero mas tarde, como un hombre adulto, otra vez se encuentra con la mujer, quien le da un cuaderno vacio y le ordena a escribir sobre el guerrero de la luz, un ser que es capaz de comprender el milagro de la vida, de luchar hasta el final por algo en lo que cree en y de escuchar las campanas que las olas hacen sonar. Algunos de los aforismos que le siguen tienen un origen spiritual Lao Tzu, Gandhi, Jesand Ús y el Rabino Najman de Breslav, entre otros, son citados. Coelho proporciona inspiracion espiritual en general, y tambien ofrece orientacion en asuntos mas mundanos, explicando las motivaciones detras del comportamiento infantil, inmaduro, momentos de cobardia, sentimientos de vacio espiritual y la renuencia al cambio.
