Ravenloft is one of the better "mood" and roleplay campaign settings in the D&D genre. While this module in book form is not a true campaign setting, it is enough to build around. Very well written and transfered into the 3.5 ruleset, Ravenloft is a both a dream and nightmare for DM's and players alike. If you are a novice DM, this is NOT the module for you. There is alot of background info to keep tabs on and it takes a seasoned DM to keep the players wrapped up in the adventure and spooked enough to make them feel on edge. Vampires are one of the more difficult villains to run. Smooth, intelligent, cunning, viscious. They require some legwork and if you do intend to run this module make sure to do your homework. Read the module at least twice through, and make sure you know the plot lines by heart. There is a subset prestige class. If you plan to use it, it may take time to set up in prior outings with your players. It may also be a good idea to introduce players to some of the story background without giving away where they are being led too. Save the "Ravenloft" name till the very last moment possible with your players. It can be one of the best mood setters in your playbook. Players will have pre conceptions of the difficulty and panic a bit with regard to preparing. Try to limit player preperation as much as possible to get the "Oh holy crap anyone bring some stakes?!?!" response. Focus their attention on other parts of the storyline or subset quests. This is one of those times you truly want your players to think that death is immenent at all times when they realize what they got themselves into. If you have a very controlling set of players who may decide to back out, and you have spent alot of time preparing, set up some serious repercussions to keep them from doing so. Set them up in a senario where they feel like they can't back out. Since some players can rebel against a DM who forces them certain ways, generate a series of steps you are pretty sure they will take that have a few path lines, still give them choices, but lead them to the goal with strings attached. That way you can say "Hey, you made those decisions, not me." But always maintain the allure of a big time reward ahead of them. You dont have to be specific, just make sure they dont feel to impressed upon. No one likes loosing a character. This is one of those modules that almost guarantees players are going to die. If you run a campaign where resurrection is readily available, make sure the penalties for doing so are harsh or very expensive. Dont take the bite out of this module (excuse the pun). Half the fun is watching your players panic in this one.
