About this product

Product Information

"No Ivy League gracefully delivers a messy truth behind the essential process of questioning and reckoning." -- Nate Powell, artist of the March trilogy When 17-year-old Hazel takes a summer job clearing ivy from the forest in Portland, Oregon, the only plan is to earn some extra cash to put toward concert tickets. Homeschooled, affluent, and sheltered, Hazel soon finds that working side by side with at-risk teens leaves no room for comforting illusions of equality and understanding. This uncomfortable and compelling memoir is an important story of a teen's awakening to the racial insularity of the upper class, the power of white privilege, and the hidden history of segregation in Portland.

Reviews
" No Ivy League gracefully delivers amessy truth behind the essential process of questioning and reckoning. Newlevantrespects young people's awareness of how class, race, gender, and history impactour experiences, and takes readers seriously enough to give space for personalreflection and growth. Fantastic brushwork, and a great sense of natural light.Highly recommended." --Nate Powell, SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL -- Gr 9 Up-In this graphicmemoir, Newlevant, who now uses gender-neutral pronouns but refers to theirteenage self using the pronouns she / her , chronicles atransformative summer working for the No Ivy League, a conservation crew ofteens who eradicated invasive species of European ivy from the Oregon forests.Newlevant is white and grew up in an insular white world, but at 17 she wasthrust into a group of young people from different races and backgrounds. Whenshe was sexually harassed by a black teen named Obasi, she reported hisbehavior, and he was fired. Newlevant was ostracized by the other teens andgrappled with guilt. As she explored her feelings, she discovered that hermother's decision to homeschool her was rooted in racism, and she started tounpack her white privilege. Careful plotting deftly depicts her growth from ateen who thinks she's got it all figured out to a more humble and self-awareperson. Newlevant's soft watercolors are tender and nostalgic. Their charactersare expressive and convey the complex emotions of this thorny story. WhileNewlevant's tidy reconciliation with Obasi's cousin belies the deeply embeddedstructural racism at play in the summer's events, the author nonetheless exposesthe tangled interplay of the personal and political. The "invasivespecies" metaphor for European colonization provides a poignant backdropfor Newlevant's awakening. Strong language and some sexual references make thistitle appropriate for older audiences. VERDICTThis authentic and relevant account delves into the messy work of recognizingone's own white privilege

Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
