The Alta Via 1 is the easiest of the six established Alta Via long-distance routes that traverse the magnificent Italian Dolomites. Well waymarked and following clear well-trodden paths, it boasts spectacular mountain vistas. Welcoming mountain huts offer overnight accommodation and meals at the end of each day, though camping is also possible on the middle stages. This guide presents the route in 11 stages, each finishing at accommodation, and also includes optional detours to take in neighbouring peaks. Famed for their striking jagged peaks and sheer rock faces, the Dolomites also bear remnants of the region's turbulent past, with barracks and trenches a stark reminder of World War I.
