Erst als relativ kleine und auch räumliche beschränkte Idee entstanden, wuchs es über die Jahre rasch und kontinuierlich an, bevor es sich schließlich zum meist genutzten Netzwerk der Welt entwickelte. Etwaige Konkurrenten hat man entweder aufgekauft (Beispiel Whatsapp) oder sich selbst mit weiteren Möglichkeiten ausgestattet.Dabei kann man über den eigentlichen Nutzen der Sozialen Netzwerke für die Konsumenten streiten. Während einige ihre Idealvorstellungen online stellen, benutzen andere das Netz wiederrum, um ihr reales Leben hinter sich lassen zu können. Man kann sich eine parallele Existenz in einer virtuellen Welt erschaffen, die sich ohne die weltlichen Beschränkungen des 'echten Lebens' entwickeln lässt. So können körperlich behinderte Menschen einen Avatar oder ein Profil erstellen, welcher einen nichtbehinderten Menschen repräsentiert. Männer können ich Frauenrollen schlüpfen, Frauen in Männerrollen. Das Alter, das Aussehen, die Herkunft, nahezu alles lässt sich Grenzenlos modifizieren.. Welche Attribute der Nutzer verändert, beschönigt oder wegfallen lässt, soll zumindest teilweise Thema dieser Arbeit sein. Neben dem Unterhaltungsaspekt und der Möglichkeit zur Kommunikation werden Soziale Netzwerke auch gerne und oft zur Selbstdarstellung genutzt. Egal ob über Bilder oder Kommentare, mit beinahe jeder Interaktion gibt man, gewollt oder ungewollt, Informationen über sich preis. Besonders häufig und intensiv werden solche Netzwerke von Jugendlichen genutzt, die Kinder ihrer Zeit und somit der Entwicklung sind.
