About this product

Product Information

Created in the jazz clubs of New York City, and initially treated by most musicians and audiences as radical, chaotic, and bewildering: bebop has become, Thomas Owen writes, 'the lingua franca of jazz, serving as the principal musical language of thousands of jazz musicians.' In Bebop, Owens conducts us on an insightful, loving tour through the music, players, and recordings that changed American culture. Combining vivid portraits of bebop's gigantic personalities - among them Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis - with deft musical analysis, he offers an instrument-by-instrument look at the key players and their innovations.

Reviews
"Both for the specialist and the general reader, Thomas Owens's Bebop: The Music and Its Players is an informative and highly readable treatment of this major development in jazz history."--Notes, "Owens does something valuable and new by offering musical transcriptions--in the manner of a string quartet score--of what an entire group is doing during an entire recording. This places the soloist in an ensemble context, without which it is impossible to fully understand what the soloistis doing."--Lingua Franca, "This is about as microscopic a look a bebop as you can get from abook....An excellent way to get a more-than-superficial knowledge of certainaspects of bebop."--Jazz Now, "The most in-depth and scholarly assessment of the context, music, and its practitioners to date."--Eddie Meadows, author of Jazz Research and Performance Materials"A detailed, well-researched book for those serious about jazz and its components. It will double as interesting reading for individuals, and be vitally useful in the classroom. Bravo!"--John Clayton"An excellent way to get a more-than-superficial knowledge of certain aspects of bebop."--Jazz Now"A very informative and enlightening book."--Horace Silver"Both for the specialist and the general reader, Thomas Owens's Bebop: The Music and Its Players is an informative and highly readable treatment of this major development in jazz history."--Notes"Accessible and inviting."--Booklist"This is about as microscopic a look a bebop as you can get from a book....An excellent way to get a more-than-superficial knowledge of certain aspects of bebop."--Jazz Now"A very informative and enlightening book on the bebop era."--Horace Silver"Owens has an impressive grasp of the essence and importance of bop. Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
