About this product

Product Information

This new edition contains new stories and updates from the super-heated days when fishing fleets turned king crab into fortunes, to the annual circus of Bristol Bay's monster salmon runs, to the bucolic life of the open-ocean trawler, the true stories in Fishing Up North: Stories of Luck and Loss in Alaskan Waters" captures the flavor of the modern fisherman's life and fortunes in the waters off Alaska. You'll find firsthand accounts of frightening weather, good fishing, terrible fishing, great days, and sweet living from the decks of crabbers, trawlers, longliners, trollers, and gillnetters. This book and others inspired film crews to trek to Alaska and cover the crabbing seasons for reality TV shows. Commercial fishing's home ports --- Dutch Harbor, Kodiak, Naknek, Cordova, Petersburg, Sitka, and Seattle --- are classic fishing towns, where docks, bars, and even quiet living merge in colorful portraits about life on the last frontier.

Reviews
"Brad Matsen is a polished writer with a quirky sense of humor and an uncanny knack for the precise metaphor."                                                                                              ---Homer [Alaska]  News., An intimate look at what it is like to spend your life chasing fish. Matsen's experience inside the industry gives a hard look at the reality of long hours, tight quarters and the gamble of the catch. Tight prose pack a lot of information.                                                                                                                       ---Urbaneye, Amazon, "Brad Matsen is a polished writer wioth a quirky sense of humor and an uncanny knack for the precise metaphor."  Homer [Alaska]  News., Matsen draws together some of the articles he published in magazines such as Alaska Fisherman's Journal, National Fisherman, Audubon, and Oceans to present an insider's knowledge of commercial fishing. From the slavish work of harvesting and processing to the tremendous profits that are possible, but never guaranteed, Matsen articulates the contentious debates surrounding fishing in Alaska. Along with stories on what constitutes over-fishing, whether foreigners have a right to get a piece of the action, and the Exxon Valdez disaster, Matsen introduces the various characters who live the fishing life. Though well written, the book has extended discussions of specific equipment and different types of fish that will limit its appeal. Recommended for libraries whose constituents are interested in fishing.      ---(Faces of Fishing, Monterey Bay Aquarium Fdn., 1997)  Kathleen A. Shanahan, American Univ. Product is 95% alike picture but a little more blurry. Controller play well but had a notice from psn that my joypad wasn't authentic and could by problematic🤷‍♂️ no trouble so far! Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
