Mario Rigoni Stern was barely twenty-one and already a battle veteran at the time of the World War II disaster he describes in The Sergeant in the Snow. In July 1942 three divisions of Italian Alpini troops, specially trained for winter warfare, began retreating--entirely on foot, with no supplies, at temperatures of 30-40 degrees below zero. By the end of the march, 90,000 men were missing or dead and 45,000 frostbitten and wounded.

    Meet the Italian Alpini on a more personal level

    I have been researching the 2GM Regio Esercito for a few years now. I enjoy historical documents and books that give the "black and white", such as organization charts, composition of units and timelines of actions fought, etc, etc. I also enjoy reading books that give insight into the life of the average foot soldier, as written by the veterans that experienced it. "The Sergeant in the Snow" gives a good insight into the Italian Alpini on the Russian front, as written by Mario Stern. I was surprised at how quick of a read it was (104 pages), as I think more details could have been added, giving it more depth and feeling for the reader. Regardless, I still enjoyed it, as it gave me a little glimpse of what an Alpino went through, while dealing with the severe weather, lack of supplies ...
