Patti Smith "covers" a lot of ground with "Twelve"
Patti Smith is a punk rock icon and beat poet laureate. This album is strange even by Patti's standards. One of the most original artists of our time, it struck me as odd, to say the least, that Patti chose to release an album of cover versions. "Twelve" is just that, twelve cover versions from artists as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Kurt Cobain, Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane and even Tears For Fears! This "covers" a lot of ground. What is true, and typical for Patti, is that she makes each and every one of these songs her own. Though many might consider her voice an acquired taste, there is no doubting or disputing the raw power and emotion she can convey. While remainining faithfull to the spirit of the originals, she manages to blend her own stream of consciousness wordplay with the ... Patti Smith is a punk rock icon and beat poet laureate. She covers Jimi Hendrix' "Are You Experienced", Neil Young's "Helpless", The Stones' "Gimme Shelter", Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit", and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and somehow makes this diverse material sound like consistent and inherently logical choices. In many ways, this is the perfect introduction to Patti Smith for those hapless souls unfamiliar with her work. Since the material is mostly familiar classics, this set highlights her style and poetic musings. All said, it is also an enjoyable listening experience that bears up well after repeated listening. I strongly urge those unfamiliar with Patti Smith to correct that oversight and this is a damn fine place to start.

"Are You Experienced?" Patti asks us in the lyrics of Jimi Hendrix' classic song. The leading song in this magnificent CD sets the tone of Patti's approach to this 12-song tribute to great rock of the 60's, 70's, 80's and even the 90's. In her husky, edgy voice with its understated emotion, Patti reinterprets Hendrix tune soulfully, maturely, paying her respects to his brilliance but doing so in a totally new way that leaves the listener feeling that the song is brand new, a new experience. But that's only the beginning! Even my wife who is not a big fan of Smith's edgy style loved the rendition of "White Rabbit," "Boy in a Bubble," and "Helpless." In most of the songs on the CD, Smith is true to the original melodies, the prime exception being the Hendrix piece which is only roughly, ... "Are You Experienced?" But even where she is true to the melody, she brilliantly interprets the phrasing in her own style, poetically viewing these works of the distant and recent past through the glasses of 2006-7, the eyes of a woman who, like us, has seen the world change so much that the words of some of these songs, critical of the world as it was then, are bounced against today's world and come across as even more questionning of humanity's position now, and where we are going. The instrumentation is truly evocative. You hear acoustic and amplified acoustic guitar, bass, drums, and more. Banjo on "Midnight Rider" by the Allman Brothers. Accordion here and there on other pieces. All the right touches to set your heart on edge through each and every piece. My favorite tracks are "Are You Experienced," "Within You and Without You," (Beatles/George Harrison), and "Teen Spirit" (Nirvana/Curt Cobain). But then, after listening to it five times in 48 hours, I am falling in love with every song on the CD.

Patti Smith Rocks!
Patti Smith rocks and anything she records is great. Her band is tight and the songs she picked to cover fit her vocal style. "Gimme Shelter" by the Rolling Stones she does has a tight groove and you just want to crank the stereo up and rock! Lenny Kaye has some great guitar licks through out the record. Patti Smith is a vital part of our rock history.
