About this product

Product Information

Gen is a book of lions and rock stars, day trips and servants, postmen and voices. In the opening sequence's exploration of youth and young manhood, the author sets his own Welsh Valleys upbringing against the '50s youth of his parents and the experience of a range of pop culture icons, including Kurt Cobain and Harry Houdini. These poems give way to a sequence of monologues from a range of voices, from an eighteenth century servant to a twenty-first century phone box, from a Welsh flag hanging on the wall of Richard Burton's dressing room to a tree standing in an out-of-town retail park. Other poems celebrate a Welsh Valleys village and the characters who live in it, and the collection concludes with a selection of sometimes witty, sometimes heartfelt love poems. With his characteristic humor, warmth, formal range and swaggering music, the author delivers a worthy follow-up to his popular, prize-winning debut.

Reviews
When Jonathan Edwards released his debut collection, My Family and Other Superheroes , back in 2014, it went on to win that years Costa Book Award for Poetry. For those of us who read and enjoyed it, it wasnt hard to see why. Edwards wrote warmly of his family alongside his other titular heroes, including Evel Knievel, Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren. His mix of references to widely known pop-culture icons alongside unknown familial icons, was endearing, full of kindness, and set the bar high for a follow-up. Four years on, Gen is that follow-up, and it doesnt disappoint. There are no massive surprises in Gen as Edwards revisits familiar (and familial) themes in the same accessible, kind and warm tone. His family stories and memories of childhood continue to be described in the context of pop culture. In Olympic 100m Final, Seoul 1988, his own memories and the events of the day are one and the same as he recalls how watching Ben Johnson win Olympic gold influenced a summers role play for him. His grandfather is described as a teenager playing in the crowd as Harry Houdini performs on Newport Bridge, pinning the personal alongside the notable public yet again. Elsewhere, Kurt Cobain Proposes to Courtney Love, TJs, Newport, 1991 has Edwards oblivious to whats going on as the days alt-pop supercouple cement their love in what one imagines went on to become a known haunt for him: I am four miles away and twelve years old Making sense of self and place through a wider public lens is something Edwards does so well. However, while My Family and parts of Gen use pop culture as something to give context and relativity to everyday experience, this idea of context and relativity is something that he really expands on in this collection. With a series of poems on well-loved locations, Edwards takes his lens and looks at far bigger issues than he has before, and does it incredibly. In Cofiwch Dryweryn, the Tyrweryn reservoir is described beautifully: the still water reflecting the surrounding hills, and the drowned village church spire breaking the surface. The village that made way for the reservoir is paid tribute to so vividly. In a striking image, Edwards writes:In Liverpool, a man turns the tap, fills the sink or a glassand in Tryweryn, the lowering watermakes the church spire grow stronger, taller.Just as Edwards is defined in relation to his icons, Tryweryn is defined in relation to Liverpool. This is done brilliantly, and made all the more powerful when the following page contains Last Day of School, Capel Celyn, 1963: a detailed look at the final class image from the school now submerged under the reservoir. With Wales, and Newport particularly, playing such a vivid role in so many of Edwards poems, the Tryweryn poems highlight the complexity of what Welshness means to him. This isnt to say that this is a dark and serious collection far from it. It contains humour, familiar names and places, and there is a sense of the poetry and magic in the everyday. In One Fine Day, a playful scene is imagined from the seedlings of simply leaving the house and heading to work. In a personal highlight, Edwards finds romance in describing the absence of romance when he pens a Song of the Retail Park Tree. His personification of the carefully pruned tree holds, for me, more romance and beauty than some of the greatest nature poems. Gen is a brilliant collection. More of the same from an incredible talent, but so much more.Liam NolanIt is possible to use this review for promotional purposes, but the following acknowledgment should be included: A review from www.gwales.com , with the permission of the Welsh Books Council. The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
