About this product

Product Information

Flying into action, daredevil photojournalist Johnny Brice is always looking for trouble . . . and more often than not, finding it. But he doesn't know what real trouble is until he rescues the beautiful woman he calls Jinx from a sinking ship. Like Bogie and Bacall, they're made for each other-even if they are a dangerous mix. Get the picture? Well, Johnny always does. The problem is, with Jinx now in the picture, all his photo-scoops are going down the drain-losing his film to water, fire or war. And it all comes to a head on assignment in China, when the Japanese shoot his plane down and take Jinx and Johnny prisoner. Their lives at risk, it's time for Johnny to get the real story about the lady. Is she really a jinx . . . or something even more sinister? In an adventure full of surprising discoveries, getting at the truth leads to the most shocking twist of all. L. Ron Hubbard had first-hand experience of flying high with Trouble on His Wings. As a young aviator, he loved to tempt danger. One journalist wrote: "The flaming-haired pilot hit the city like a tornado a few years ago. . . . He just dared the ground to come up and hit him." The knowledge and insight he gained during those flights is clearly evident in his aerial adventure stories. "Very dramatic, colorful locales, fascinating characters, with fascinating histories." -Tim Powers

Reviews
"The prolific Hubbard was a staple in pulp magazines of the 1930s-50s. He churned stories out in every genre-detective, Westerns, adventure, sf-he did it all. His tales were simple: loaded with tough men, beautiful babes, and tons of action. Trouble (1939) finds top reporter/cameraman Johnny Brice's life going to hell after meeting Jinx, a girl who's bad luck from head to foot. VERDICT Hubbard is always a quick, fun read. Fans of pulp writing will eat these up. Note that audio versions are available. The audios feature full-casts and great sound effects. Listen to one and you'll be hooked." -Publishers Weekly, "Hubbard's pulp novel charts the adventures of hotheaded and heroic Johnny Brice; his dame, Jinx; and his buddy Irish. After Brice-on assignment covering a burning ship at sea for the newsreels-pulls Jinx out of the water, the trio begins gallivanting around the world (from Idaho to Asia) constantly getting in and out of trouble. Performed with great verve in the style of a classic radio play, this full cast recording incorporates realistic sound effects and mood music. While each cast member turns in a stellar performance-especially Jennifer Aspen as the troubled and spunky Jinx-the narration of R.F. Daley steals the show. He reads in a tone that is both excited and vaguely amused-a perfect combination given the pure pulpiness of Hubbard's text. Listeners in search of an audiobook that's both fun and fast-paced will be delighted." -Publishers Weekly, "The prolific Hubbard was a staple in pulp magazines of the 1930s-50s. When he's with her, his films get ruined, his planes crash or get shot out of the sky, he loses his job, or he gets taken prisoner by the Japanese. And yet, despite all this, love blossoms. This is one of Hubbard's more breathless, audacious adventure tales. It begins with hero Johnny Brice parachuting out of a plane and into the ocean to get picked up by a passing ship--and moves from one specatacular, life-threatening episode to the next. Hubbard propels us through the story, never letting it slow down long enough for us to ponder the sheer improbability of it. It's a movie serial between two covers, a rollicking adventure that promises big thrills and delivers them. A must for fans of campy, Indiana Jones-style adventures." --David Pitt, Booklist, In this short novel, originally published in 1939, a globe-trotting journalist (he shoots film for one of the movie studios' newsreels) gets mixed up with a beautiful woman who brings him bad luck at every turn.  When he's with her, his films get ruined, his planes crash or get shot out of the sky, he loses his job, or he gets taken prisoner by the Japanese. The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
