Excellent debut album by Queen + Paul Rodgers
This album is three flavors I like mixing it up very well and doing what they do. A nice variety of songs, and if anything, I wish there had been even more. I like that it was a pretty raw, straight forward record without a lot of gloss on it. Its very genuine in that way and I respond to that. And, in the Queen tradition, I like that its not taking itself *too* seriously, that they gave themselves the freedom to just have fun, make fun music, and just sort of be lads playing music together. On the flip side, I like that there's a lot of genuine, unadorned emotion - some hope, some sadness, some loss, some ambition. It's a rounded record, if you know what I mean. And it has a very organic, "all came out of the same pot" kind of feeling to it, which contrasts rather sharply, to my ears at ... This album is three flavors I like mixing it up very well and doing what they do. A nice variety of songs, and if anything, I wish there had been even more. And it has a very organic, "all came out of the same pot" kind of feeling to it, which contrasts rather sharply, to my ears at least, with most of the Queen-proper studio albums starting with "The Game", all of which sound to me like 3 or 4 great singles surrounded by some very pleasant but mostly inconsequential filler, written by 4 seperate songwriters working more or less alone. Conversely, I do wish this album had had a couple of poppier tracks, as Queen became as much a pop band as a rock band in the '80s and '90s. Still, where it may not "pop", it does rock, smolder, and soar. Highlights from the album include "Cosmos Rockin'", a great rockin' opener, the surprisingly spiritual "Time to Shine", the unpretentious and emotional "Small", the magnificent "Warboys", the folky buzz of "Call Me", the bluesy groove of "Voodoo", "Some Things That Glitter" is lovely and melodic, the fun and poppy "C-lebrity", the topical epic "Say Its Not True", and the label-defying new wavey "Surfs Up, School's Out!". As in the Queen tradition, there's styles, colors, moods, and something to please nearly everyone. I absolutely think that this trio is, in every way, a new band. Being the vocalist, Paul's influence is very strong, but having heard a lot of Paul's solo work from the last 15 years, Brian and Roger's influence on Paul is crystal clear. It's a much more defined and shaped album than Paul's solo stuff, a much broader variety of sounds, and of course the elements of the classic Queen sound are easily and frequently identifiable. I'm not saying to myself "ok, this reminded me of Queen album _______ " because this just feels like a very different animal. Too many things have changed and too much time has passed to make that kind of comparison. It just feels like a new creative entity, and rather like a second marriage. Both people bring their baggage, good and bad, from their prior marriages, and those elements blend into something that's new and old at the same time. And likewise, Queen + Paul Rodgers is three excellent musicians acknowleding their past accomplishments and successes while keeping themselves firmly rooted in the here and now. After listening to "The Cosmos Rocks", I hope they make another album together as Queen + Paul Rodgers. It took a lot of guts to form this group, fully aware as they must have been, of the potentially irate fans and the snarky self-satisfied critics who surely have their knives out for a release like this. But the work stands on its own, very solidly and very proudly. They've made themselves a very interesting beginning, a strong foundation upon which to build, and I would really like to hear how they develop as a writing unit and as a band. The Queen is dead; long live the Queen. Plus Paul Rodgers.

The album is good and I like the mixture of Taylor/May/Rodgers. It also has a bit of Spike's All Star Band feel to one or two tracks which is nice, but not great. Overall I think they could have done better though - but then again, they don't have to! I do miss input from John Deacon on this album and so for me it's actually not a Queen/Rodgers production but more a mixture of a bit of this and a bit of that. I also miss the super production power of David Richards who I think did a great job producing the last Queen albums. I bet this is the last time we will see any material from these three rock power players...but that's OK because they do deserve a bit of rest now.The album is good and I like the mixture of Taylor/May/Rodgers. quality of the CD is great but if you are expecting Queen you will be disappointed. it sounds more like Paul Rodgers solo material. but it is still a good album.

I am a sucker for any music from Paul Rodgers From his time in bands like Free & Bad Co. to his solo issues. I am also a fan of Queen. So for me the idea of the combo of Paul with the remains of queen makes for a real fine CD. All the songs here retain that queen sound but also sound fresh & new with Paul as frontman. From the 1st track to the last this is one good CD For Queen fans as well as Free or Bad Co.fans.I am a sucker for any music from Paul Rodgers From his time in bands like Free & Bad Co. to his solo issues.
