Still Surprising
JOC jumps on the Bandwagon of Contemporary Artists who release an album of Hymns, such as Amy Grant and the Passion movement. I expected this to be a real ho-hummer that I'd probably get sick of relatively quickly. I was quite wrong! This CD ranks up there with the rest of their catalog. This CD is alive with a worshipful spirit that permeates just about every track. Some songs are performed pretty straightforward (I'll Fly Away, They'll know we are Christians) and others are a bit more modernized, but it's all good stuff. They get a little help from the Blind Boys of Alabama, Sara Kelly, and Martin Smith (of Delirious). Most of the CD remains very acoustic (like their prior CD), and though I'd love to hear a bit more crunching guitar from the band (as in 'Crazy Times'), their ... a band on the bandwagon
While always quite worshipful as a band, this issue of mostly modernized covers is merely a nice addition to an already established contemporary worship music library. It adds an earthy and organic forumulization to a genre currently being taken advantage of in the Christian music industry. It is folksy and acoustic, mellow and soulful. Their coverage of popular church hymns is okay but it is when they cover negro spirituals that they sound a bit more unique. But, there are simply times where this cd merely plods along (take, for instance, Nothing but the Blood and They'll Know We are Christians by Our Love). It is good music for meditation or reading, but it is still mostly easy listening. Jars of Clay is easy to listen to but here they aren't as creative as I was expecting them to ... While certainly different than much of what is repeatedly coming out of the worship machine, I still expected more creativity from such gifted musicians. Their theological topics are balanced and it is nice that they do not pander as much to what makes worshippers feel good, especially when considering the ages of most of the songs that were chosen. While this is not Sonicflood redoing Delirious or Passion imitating Hillsongs, it is still not all that original. I especially like the first song, which I believe that they wrote themselves.

Modern Interpretations on Classic Hymns
Redemption Songs is a wonderful collection of classic hymns and gospel songs, with modern interpretations by Jars of Clay. Upon first listen, my family found ourselves singing along to the well known lyrics. There are some true standouts in this collection: I Need Thee Every Hour, God Will Ift Up Your Head, I'll Fly Away, It Is Well With My Soul, Nothing but the Blood of Jesus, and On Jordan's Stormy Banks I Stand. Even our two children enjoy and request the disk while in the car. This is a great CD.
These guys are incredible. These are excellent songs with a great history in the church. Jars of Clay puts a new twist on them without looses the feel that would appeal to young and old. I love all types of music and really get into hard rock as well. These guys put a kinda blue grass feel to these songs. My daughter is 18, I am 41 and my dad is 69 this year. We all love this cd.
