About this product

Product Information

A controversial tale of friendship and tragedy during the Great Depression A Penguin Classic Over seventy-five years since its first publication, Steinbeck's tale of commitment, loneliness, hope, and loss remains one of America's most widely read and taught novels. An unlikely pair, George and Lennie, two migrant workers in California during the Great Depression, grasp for their American Dream. They hustle work when they can, living a hand-to-mouth existence. For George and Lennie have a plan: to own an acre of land and a shack they can call their own. When they land jobs on a ranch in the Salinas Valley, the fulfillment of their dream seems to be within their grasp. But even George cannot guard Lennie from the provocations, nor predict the consequences of Lennie's unswerving obedience to the things George taught him. Of Mice and Men represents an experiment in form, which Steinbeck described as "a kind of playable novel, written in a novel form but so scened and set that it can be played as it stands." A rarity in American letters, it achieved remarkable success as a novel, a Broadway play, and three acclaimed films. This edition features an introduction by Susan Shillinglaw, one of today's leading Steinbeck scholars. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

" Of Mice and Men is a thriller, a gripping tale running to novelette length that you will not set down until it is finished. It is more than that; but it is that. . . . In sure, raucous, vulgar Americanism, Steinbeck has touched the quick in his little story." --The New York Times "Brutality and tenderness mingle in these strangely moving pages. . . . The reader is fascinated by a certainty of approaching doom." --Chicago Tribune "A short tale of much power and beauty. Mr. Steinbeck has contributed a small masterpiece to the modern tough-tender school of American fiction." --Times Literary Supplement [London], " Of Mice and Men is a thriller, a gripping tale running to novelette length that you will not set down until it is finished. Product is 95% alike picture but a little more blurry. Controller play well but had a notice from psn that my joypad wasn't authentic and could by problematic🤷‍♂️ no trouble so far! Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!

  • Great classic

The book was in great shape. You could see it's age in the slightly discoloration of the pages and faded highlighted section. I needed to read it for a banned book club and didn't mind the highlighting. Made me look at it more closely to see what others found compelling. It did not disappoint.

  • Always a good read!

I picked up this copy to read with my daughter for her Freshman required reading in High School. It's my third time around, but it's just as enjoyable as the first. The way Steinbeck creates relationships without sentimentality is amazing. He brings a new level to the feeling of "brother from another mother"... his writing continues to astound me decades after it's considered relevance.

  • good read

great, classic. i would highly reccommend this book. very warm and sad. great brother story........................................................................................................................

  • 9th Grade Required Summer Reading Book

Read this book aloud to my 14 year old daughter in two days. She said it was "slow", but, I loved the underlying story of true friendship.
