Exotic Creatures Of The Deep * by Sparks
Definately Brothers Mael and yet not quite Sparky enough for me. Classical flavor when I am more in the mood for something with a little more kick to it. Fun yes, as usual, edgy a bit, unexpected twists and turning tunes of course. But I would like a bit more of the in your head kick you in the knee looney tunes they used to put on the platter. That was the faire for me, I like living in the past, and enjoying it. A bit here and there reminds me of the Sparring Sparks but not enough to give it a "Excellent" though that seems like cheating the brothers Mael out of their fair share of accolades. Good is good enough for Exotic Creatures. Anything Sparks is worth having, so if you think a less than excellent justifies not having the disc, you would be wrong. Anything good by the Sparks ... Definately Brothers Mael and yet not quite Sparky enough for me. Classical flavor when I am more in the mood for something with a little more kick to it. Sparks Exotic Creatures of the Deep
On this their 21st release Sparks continue to prove they are one of the worlds great bands. Like fine wine Sparks continue to improve; this cd is as contemporary as any group in the world while mataining the off center, almost subversive appeal that has been the bedrock of their charm for 38 years. While retreating from the orchestral arrangements marking their last four releases "Exotic" is more pop rock though no less an eccentric comentary on the modern scene. Lighten Up Morrisey is an absolutely brilliant song worthy of top ten status (which I believe it has acheived in Germany). This album is a spiritual successor to the likes of their "Kimono My House". Anyone who has ever enjoyed the wacky but enjoyable world of Sparks in any of their (or your) phases will love this cd. As ...
