The true story of John Lennon's troubled childhood and difficult relationship with his family is brought to the screen in this period drama. Young John (Alex Ambrose) is a bright but sharp-tongued boy living in the coastal town of Liverpool during the 1950s with his aunt Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas) and uncle George (David Threlfall). John's father walked out on the family when he was four years old, and the boy was given to Mimi to raise, even though his mother, Julia (Anne-Marie Duff), was still alive. While Mimi's straight-laced nature runs counter to John's more reckless personality, they clearly love one another and the household is thrown into chaos when George dies suddenly. At the funeral, teenage John (now played by Aaron Johnson) sees Julia, and learns to his surprise that she lives only a few blocks away from Mimi. John pays her a visit, and Julia gratefully welcomes him back into her life. Julia's personality is a much closer fit to John than Mimi, and she encourages his love for writing and music, teaching him to play the banjo. However, John's renewed relationship with Julia brings up a number of unanswered questions, and causes new tensions between Mimi and John. And as rock & roll becomes the hot new sound of the day, John falls in love with the bold new music and makes a friend who is interested in forming a band, Paul (Thomas Brodie Sangster). The first feature film from artist-turned-director Sam Taylor-Wood, NOWHERE BOY was the closing night attraction at the 2009 BFI London Film Festival.

Having been a teen during the 60's when Beatlemania was all the rage I have a special place in my heart for the lives and music of all four Beatles. John's early life was a mystery to us all and this movie has cleared that all up for us. We all knew that John was raised by his Aunt but the details are SO heart wrenching. Out of the ashes the Phoenix rises. To see how John coped with what he was dealt in this life and how he used it as a creative catalyst was very eye opening. I love him more now and miss him more now. Beam down your Peace and Love John Lennon, we need it more than ever... Let me preface this by saying...if you're expecting the history of the Beatles to unfold in front of your eyes, you will be disappointed...but if you'd like a little insight into the mind and upcoming of John Lennon, then you will probably enjoy this movie. It's primarily about John's relationship with his Aunt Mimi and his mother Julia. It does touch on his meeting and partnership with Paul McCartney and George Harrison, but Ringo Starr is not yet in the picture, and not one single time in the movie is the name "Beatles" mentioned. It is "hinted" at, near the end of the movie...but as far as John's musical history, this movie tends to focus more on his band "The Quarrymen" (of whom Paul and George were eventually to become members of).Let me preface this by saying...if you're expecting the history of the Beatles to unfold in front of your eyes, you will be disappointed...but if you'd like a little insight into the mind and upcoming of John Lennon, then you will probably enjoy this movie. This is a GREAT movie! I watched it once and couldn't get it all out of my head. I have watched it many more times since then. The ones playing John and Paul are Fabulous!! I give it 5 stars/6 if I could. The only let down is when it is over, I could have watched at least another couple hours. My favorite was always John in the Beatles. This is a movie I will never forget. A MUST MUST see. Aunt Mime and Julia seem also real! The song In Spite Of All The Danger at the end should be a Number One hit! I am ready to watch it again, anytime! I just bought the British version CD soundtrack also. I know it will be great also!This is a GREAT movie! "Nowhere Boy" is an excellent film and it gives some insight into the life of John Lennon before The Beatles. Knowing about his early life, and all of the trials and tribulations he endured, sheds some light on his sense of humor, his pessimism, and indeed, on his song writing. It also shows how he developed as a musician, a man, a husband, and a father, especially with the birth of his second son with Yoko. All this information makes his murder all the more heartbreaking."Nowhere Boy" is an excellent film and it gives some insight into the life of John Lennon before The Beatles. I bought Nowhere Boy because one of my friends is a huge Beatles fan. We saw a preview for it on the Easy A dvd and it looked like a very interesting movie. And we were correct! We immediately fell in love with this movie. The actors were amazing at playing their parts, everything just fit together so well. I definitely recommend this movie! 5 stars and all that!
