Reviews
‘Beautifully subtle, magnificent, shimmering... notably well written... the fineness of Tandon’s writing, its willingness to talk of both text and life, is unusual in contemporary criticism, and throws his own voice beyond the academy.’ James Wood, The London Review of Books, 'A book brimming with insights and many acute perceptions... Bharat Tandon outlines a refreshing redirection for Austen studies…' Times Literary Supplement, 'A book brimming with insights and many acute perceptions... Bharat Tandon outlines a refreshing redirection for Austen studies.' -'Times Literary Supplement', ‘A book brimming with insights and many acute perceptions... Bharat Tandon outlines a refreshing redirection for Austen studies’ Times Literary Supplement, 'Beautifully subtle, magnificent, shimmering... notably well written... the fineness of Tandon's writing, its willingness to talk of both text and life, is unusual in contemporary criticism, and throws his own voice beyond the academy.'  James Wood, TheLondonReview of Books, "Making an important contribution to Austen scholarship, Tandon (external director of studies, Emmanuel College, Cambridge) has written a magisterial work whose scope and erudition are belied by its modest-sounding title. This book is about much more than talk--or, more accurately, it makes the case that for Austen talk is about much more than talk. Although it is a commonplace among Austen readers to note that her novels are supremely concerned with conversation, Tandon considers this idea afresh, bringing a weight of scholarly knowledge to bear on the age-old question of Austen's philosophical seriousness. Tandon's analysis ranges from a consideration of 18th-century and Romantic linguistic practice, to contemporary narratology, to the analytic philosophy of Austin and Searle, to theories of consciousness and mind. A significant extension of Marilyn Butler's Jane Austen and the War of Ideas (CH, Mar'76), this witty and learned book takes its place beside such important recent works as The Postcolonial Jane Austen, ed. by You-me Park and Rajeswari Sunder Rajan (2000), and Claudia Johnson's Equivocal Beings (CH, Dec'95). Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty." -- D. K. Kreisel, Warren Wilson College in CHOICE"Can Austen's novels somehow combine an ideal rationality and an ideal irrationality in a harmonious resolution? Bharat Tandon, though he does not quite put it in these terms, think they can. His subtle, learned book is an examination of the various ways Austen's favoroured characters learn to listen to each other, to speak to each other, and to speak to themsleves. So his emphasis is o the ways these novels move towars a convincing and rich harmony, a mutuality fo give and take, a true marriage of minds...The fineness of Tandon's writing, its willingness to talk both of text and life is unusualy in contemporary criticism, and throwns his own voice beyond the academy..."--London Review of Books, 'A book brimming with insights and many acute perceptions... Bharat Tandon outlines a refreshing redirection for Austen studies.' --'Times Literary Supplement'

Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
