About this product

Product Information

From the acclaimed author-artist Maurice Sendak comes a Caldecott Honor-winning tale of a fantastical dream world. This comic fantasy will delight readers of all ages with playful illustrations and an imaginative world only Sendak could create. In the Night Kitchen is the classic story of Mickey's adventures in the bakers' kitchen as they prepare our morning cake. "Milk in the batter! Milk in the batter! We bake cake and nothing's the matter!" the bakers sing. The bakers in the night kitchen need more milk for their batter, but then Mickey falls into the cake! They decide to put him in the oven anyway, but Mickey has different plans. He escapes in a plane made of bread dough and helps the bakers find the milk at last. "A celebration of the primal, sensory world of childhood and an affirmation of its imaginative potency," proclaimed Children's Books and Their Creators.

Reviews
Mickey is pure joy. . . or as the cooks chorus MILK IN THE BATTER! MILK IN THE BATTER! WE BAKE CAKE! AND NOTHING'S THE MATTER! (Can it go without saying that the pictures are superb.), The story of Mickey's nighttime adventure in the bakers' kitchen is a highly original dream fantasy [with] deliciously playful illustrations [and a] chantable, easily remembered text. Pure delight for young children.

  • In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak (1995)

A CALDECOTT HONOR BOOK This book has been part of my daycare library for approximately a year, perhaps longer. It does not get dragged out very often, unless the kids are in a curious mood. Curious, I say, because the book has quite an amusing imaginative story line, whimsical nighttime adventures in the kitchen with great illustrations to go with them, and several scenes with little boy nudity. The nudity tends to bring quite a bit of curiosity and lots of giggles when we read the book. If nudity is not offensive, this book would be great for anyone working with kids or wishing to add to their own children's library. Thank you for taking the time to read my review, and I hope it helps you determine whether this book is right for you. Sincerely, Mrs. skywalker_track

  • My 3 boys love this book!

We absolutely love this book! The artwork is interesting and fun, (fair warning naked boy in the book). The story is dream-like and memorable and often quoted in my house. My boys go around chanting, "Milk in the batter! Milk in the batter"

  • scary but funny

My own kids loved this story and now my granddaughter loves it. The drawings are so imaginative and original. Maurice Sendak is an author all children should read and enjoy.
