About this product

Product Information

The comic book superheroes -- Superman, Batman, the Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four, X-Men, and many others -- have proved to be a powerful and enduring thread in popular culture, a rich source of ideas for moviemakers, novelists, and philosophers. Superheroes and Philosophy brings together 16 leading philosophers and some of the most creative people in the world of comics, from storywriters to editors to critics, to examine the deeper issues that resonate from the hyperbolic narratives and superhuman actions of this heroic world. The comic book narratives of superheroes wrestle with profound and disturbing issues in original ways: the definitions of good and evil, the limits of violence as an efficacious means, the perils of enforcing justice outside the law, the metaphysics of personal identity, and the definition of humanity. The book also features original artwork specially commissioned from some of the most popular of today's comic book artists.

"Superman's costume always bugged me when I was a kid... So you need a secret identity -- cool. But what's the deal with all the rainbow-hued Spandex masks and costumes'... I found the answer to this great metaphysical dilemma in the book Superheroes and Philosophy, edited by Tom Morris and Matt Morris. In various essays, college philosophy professors and others ruminate on profound issues raised by the superhero lifestyle, such as how Batgirl reflects Nietzsche's moral perfectionism." -- Rick de Yampert, Daytona Beach News-Journal , December 15, 2006, "Superman's costume always bugged me when I was a kid… So you need a secret identity cool. Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!

  • If your philosophy teacher let's you use superheroes as a topic...

As a comic collector for over 60 years, I appreciate the idea of a little introspection on the values and ideals transmitted by this art form and embodied in its own iconoclastic genre, the super-hero comic. The articles come from a variety of individuals from a rough panoply of backgrounds From comic collectors who know a little philosophy to philosophers who read a comic (or in one case, saw the first Spiderman movie) for the purpose of examining it philosophically. It is not filled with bibliographic references (which might drive my rating down a notch) but you are given the comic book issue in question when it demands it. When it is just the character or a generic quality (say secret identity) it is not quite as specific. A philosophy teacher who is specializing in ethics may just use ...
