Gerontological practice in social work is becoming an area of concern. There are many factors for this concern, including (but not restricted) to the fact that most developed nations in Western Europe and Northern America have markedly aging populations. The voice of the social worker is critical in these situations because it is often these social workers that are responsible for connecting vulnerable older adults to services that are designed for a much younger generation.This book has been written from that perspective. There are eight thematic chapters that will take you through the journey that a professional worker is expected to travel as they try to improve the social functioning of those who are allegedly "on the wrong side" of their 60s and above. The subliminal message in this book is that productive aging is not only a reality but also a necessity for all countries across the globe. Social workers are one of the key professionals ensuring that this happens. One of the responses to aging in the developed nations is institutionalization through nursing and residential care. The idea is that elderly people are no longer productive members of society who must nevertheless be given some level of basic care in their final days. Many social workers have been deployed in the business of looking after the elderly and the field of gerontology is particularly a popular one in the developing nations. Nevertheless, this field has sometimes been treated with contempt in as far as it is seen to be one of managing the final stages of frail people rather than actually contributing to the development of society. For those that are living in the developing world, the news can be seemingly dire. For example, they only receive meager allowances that might appear to be derisory. At the same time, those who are living in developing countries often have the kind of social networks and social capital that is virtually non-existent within the so-called developed nations. Social workers must find a way of providing appropriate psychosocial support depending on the context. The context can be diverse and interesting but the service provision must be unfailing of a very high quality and standard. This book attempts to guide social workers as they negotiate these complex realities in their own work. Professionalism has been identified as a key tool for social workers that are looking to engage with vulnerable populations such as the elderly. No matter how good and efficient their professionalism is, it cannot completely replace the role of the family and community at large which often provides services at the margins where most officialdom is unable to reach. Moreover, the demands on social workers are increasing in terms of their scope, coverage, and quality. Virtually every theatre of practice including adult protection, mental health, clinical casework, advocacy, and research; it is anticipated that social workers will provide a personalized quality service. In reality, the burdens of the job mean that they are rarely able to live up to these lofty standards.
