Im Jahre 1942 bot sich mir Gelegenheit, die Halbinsel Chal- kidike mit ihrer h chsten Erhebung, demA thos, die nord g ischen Inseln Lemnos, Evstratios, Mytiline und Chios zu besuchen und auf mehreren k rzeren und l ngeren Fahrten Einblick in die Vegetationsverh ltnisse von Gebieten zu erlangen, die ihrer Lage und der politischen Verh ltnisse wegen bisher von wenig Botanikern besucht worden sind. Erst RECHINGER ( 1936) hat in j ngster Zeit mehrere Reisen nach den "L\g ischen Inseln unternommen und weilte auch kurze Zeit auf Lemnos, Mytiline und Chios, um dort f r seine "Flora aegaea" zu sammeln. Dabei zeigte sich, wie unerforscht diese Gebiete waren, denn RECHINGER konnte anl lich seiner kurzen Aufenthalte zahlreiche neue Arten entdecken. Wenn so auch zahlreiche floristische Angaben aus den obengenannten Gebieten vorliegen, so fehlen doch solche ber die Vegetations- verh ltnisse fast v llig. Nur das Gebiet des Athos ist durch die klassische Schilderung GRISEBACHs (1841), durch die Untersuchun- gen von MATTFELD ( 1927, 1930) und TURILL ( 1929) genauer be- kannt geworden. Weitere Arbeiten ber die g ischen Inseln Samothrake und Samos liegen von A. v. DEGEN (1891) und von 1 STEFANI und FoRSYTHE-MAJCR ( 1892) vor . Die beiden zuletzt genannten Inseln wurden von mir nicht besucht. Weit besser als die Pflanzenwelt ist die Geologie der g ischen Inseln bekannt: ber die Chalkidike liegen Untersuchungen von BuRGERSTEIN und NEUMAYR (1880), ber Mytiline von MAIRE und ber Chios von TELLER ( 1830) vor.
