Reviews
"Through the medium of picture postcards, Donald C. Jackson relates the history of dams as a feature of the American landscape, demonstrating the value of such 'ephemera' as a resource for historical inquiry and a means of enhancing our understanding of the built environment. The illustrations are compelling and often surprising." --Carol Poh, Historical Consultant and past President, Society for Industrial Archeology, "Combining expertise in civil engineering with extensive knowledge of popular images, Donald C. Jackson shows that Americans celebrated dams as beautifying improvements that enabled logging, manufacturing, navigation, irrigation, hydropower, flood control, and recreation. He re-creates the enthusiasm that, despite occasional disasters, culminated during the New Deal, followed by increasing environmental criticism. An engrossing book." -David E. Nye, University of Southern Denmark, "Through the medium of picture postcards, Donald C. Jackson relates the history of dams as a feature of the American landscape, demonstrating the value of such 'ephemera' as a resource for historical inquiry and a means of enhancing our understanding of the built environment. The illustrations are compelling and often surprising." -Carol Poh, Historical Consultant and past President, Society for Industrial Archeology, "For readers new to the history of dams or to visual culture as primary source, 'Pastoral and Monumental' offers a wonderful starting point. Jackson provides an accessible and deeply illustrated introduction to the dual technologies of the postcard and the dam." --Technology and Culture, "Donald C. Jackson shows just how thoroughly dams captured the American imagination in this stimulating book. The last word on postcards." -Ted Steinberg, Case Western Reserve University, "Unlike most historians who use postcard images, Jackson goes beyond utilizing the reproductions as mere illustration, by discussing how they expressed popular attitudes and ideologies." --The Journal of American History, "Donald C. Jackson shows just how thoroughly dams captured the American imagination in this stimulating book. The last word on postcards." --Ted Steinberg, Case Western Reserve University, "The author's research and knowledge of this American experience as depicted through postcards should be enjoyable for both the collector and those interested in the shaping of our country's history." --Michigan Postcard Club News, "Combining expertise in civil engineering with extensive knowledge of popular images, Donald C. An engrossing book." --David E. Product is 95% alike picture but a little more blurry. Controller play well but had a notice from psn that my joypad wasn't authentic and could by problematic🤷‍♂️ no trouble so far! Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!
