About this product

Product Information

"The Hand-Sculpted House inspired me to learn and do more and transformed how I saw homes and building in general."--Mother Earth News "If you follow it word for word you will build yourself a house no matter who you are."--Builder Paul Dillon, quoted in The Irish Times Are you ready for the Cob Cottage? This is a building method so old and so simple that it has been all but forgotten in the rush to synthetics. A cob cottage, however, might be the ultimate expression of ecological design, a structure so attuned to its surroundings that its creators refer to it as "an ecstatic house." The authors build a house the way others create a natural garden. They use the oldest, most available materials imaginable-earth, clay, sand, straw, and water-and blend them to redefine the future (and past) of building. Cob (the word comes from an Old English root, meaning "lump") is a mixture of non-toxic, recyclable, and often free materials. Building with cob requires no forms, no cement, and no machinery of any kind. Builders actually sculpt their structures by hand. Building with earth is nothing new to America; the oldest structures on the continent were built with adobe bricks. Adobe, however, has been geographically limited to the Southwest. The limits of cob are defined only by the builder's imagination. Cob offers answers regarding our role in Nature, family and society, about why we feel the ways that we do, about what's missing in our lives. Cob comes as a revelation, a key to a saner world. Cob has been a traditional building process for millennia in Europe, even in rainy and windy climates like the British Isles, where many cob buildings still serve as family homes after hundreds of years. Cob houses (or cottages, since they are always efficiently small by American construction standards) are not only compatible with their surroundings, they ARE their surroundings, literally rising up from the earth. They are full of light, energy-efficient, and cozy, with curved walls and built-in, whimsical touches. They are delightful. They are ecstatic.

Product is 95% alike picture but a little more blurry. Controller play well but had a notice from psn that my joypad wasn't authentic and could by problematic🤷‍♂️ no trouble so far! Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!

  • So far so good.

I'm still reading the book. It seems though, to be a well written book with a lot of pertinent information. Great use of Illustrations to picture the idea being conveyed.

  • Build your own cob house!

Excellent book on all things cob. Extensive writing on the history, technicalities of building and possible problems and their solutions all wrapped in hippy back-to-the-land philosophy. If that's what you're looking for you will find it in this book.

  • The Hand-Sculpted House by Evans, Smiley, Smith

I purchased The Hand-Sculpted House recently and was immediately riveted by this well written book. Anyone interested in building with renewable materials would be able to absorb the information needed to take on their project. I liked that the writers were knowledgable and had obviously researched many techniques and shared them with precise detailed descriptions. The only dislikes I could mention is that I would have LOVED more colored pictures of finished projects and a few avenues of building were cut short with another book (of their writings) recommended to purchase.

  • hand sculpted house

very informative and inspiring. Wish I was 30 years younger and I would attempt to put this info to action.
