Set in Australia, Mia's Magic Wand is a fugitive journey from Sydney Harbour to the Kimberley. A mother, a father and a monk all want to fix what's f****d with the world. Each loves to gamble. The mother gambles with politicians, the father with weapons, and the monk with God. When the mother is raped and an archive of secret videos falls into her hands the gamblers push all their chips onto the table. This story has all the elements of a thriller. There's plenty of fast action, there are killings and there's coarse language but we also have space to breathe and to feel the different points of view as each wrestles in their own way with family and brokenness, faith and despair, home and alienation: the chapters rotating from Mia to Red to Paddy all the way through to the end The plot revolves around an archive of blackmailing videos--The Magic Wand--owned by billionaire philanthropist, Tate Wolsey. Tate can have anything he wants, except for Mia, so he dopes her and rapes her. But Tate underestimates his wife, Claudia. Outraged, she steals the Magic Wand and gives it to Mia. All hell breaks loose and Mia ends up with the last surviving copy of the Wand. A federal election looms, news of the theft of the Wand leaks out and prominent politicians begin to worry. One of them, the Federal Police Minister, makes a deal with a jailed murderer, Dog, who holds a grudge against Mia. In quick succession, Dog is released from jail, Tate's wife is murdered and Mia's daughter is kidnapped. Late one night, Mia arranges to hand over the Wand in exchange for her daughter but the deal goes sideways and a gun battle erupts. In the chaos, Mia and Red rescue their daughter and flee to the mountains--still in possession of the Wand. Trekking to a highway, they hitch a ride with a truckie and travel to the Kimberley where a bloody struggle plays out. Dog is still at large and makes his last attempt on Mia while she's attending a funeral.

Had to repurchase the book because the first one arrived badly damaged during transit. I contacted seller 3 times with no response but went ahead and recorder. Seller finally replied after I repurchased the second copy thanking me for my order. So had to buy this book twice and pay shipping twice. Second order arrived in good shape but packing still thin.
