Intriguing, but light WW 2 spy movie.
So great to have a good dvd of one of our favorites. We had a copy dvd of this movie, transferred from VHS. Horrible copy, the sound was really bad. So good to have a copy with good picture and sound! Very Happy!

WW2 spy tale is a winner!
Some of you may have trouble with mousy voiced Melanie Griffith in a dramatic role, but this film may change your mind. Griffith plays a strong willed speaks her mind woman during World War 2. The film is done as the first hand account of the lead character, Linda Voss, a half Irish, half German Jewish woman obsessed with Germany & movies. Voss' love of movies pops up throughout the course of this film & are well placed & pivotal to the plot. The film starts out with an old Voss arriving on a TV set to film a segment for a BBC documentary about women in WW2. after a rocky start, she begins to tell her tale. Voss arrives in downtown pre-war New York looking for work. She applies for a secretarial position, but doesn't get the job until it is found she is bilingual. ... BUT, when Pearl Harbor happens & the US enters the war, Voss soon finds her love is really an intelligence officer for the Army. he leaves her to begin his fight abroad. Voss searches for any info about him through coded communications at her new job within military intelligence. The two reunite months later at a USO club & Voss returns to be Leland's right hand. When a very influential spy is killed, Leland reluctantly sends Voss to Germany to replace him. This begins a wild mystery ride for Voss as she tries to worm her way into an influential position within the elite of Nazi Germany. Intrigue is the name of the game as the untrained Voss desperately tries not to blow her cover. She slips off the radar for awhile before Leland finds her & tries to get her out. Star power is the name of the game here as Griffith is joined by Michael Douglas as Ed Leland. Also in the stellar cast is Joely Richardson who plays Margrete Von Eberstein, Voss' contact in Germany who instantly becomes her best friend, but is she? The legendary Sir John Gielgud plays the top Allied spy in Germany, while Liam Neeson stars as General Franze-Otto Dietrich who takes Voss in & is her ultimate intelligence objective. This is an awesome spy thriller with plenty of intrigue & surprises around every corner! Griffith plays her part well & you soon over look her child-like voice. The supporting roles are also well played. This is a wonderful espionage film sure to keep you on the edge of your seat!

THIS MOVIE HAS IT ALL! A MUST SEE!
This is a wonderful movie...thrilling, gripping, full of suspense & romance too! The setting is in both the U.S. & Germany during WWII. While Michael Douglas is always great, this is probably Melanie Griffith's most impressive role. She is amazing in her portrayal of a half Irish/half Jewish-American secretary...who suddenly finds herself thrust into the world of spies & double-agents. Because she speaks German (learned from her Grandmother) she volunteers to undertake a dangerous mission as a spy behind military lines. Her boss, Michael Douglas plays a fabulous tough guy character, who isn't quite as good a spy as his secretary! These two have GREAT chemistry together! PLOT: LOVELY Melanie Griffith speaks German and is a secretary for the War Department in World War 2 and her lover /Boss (Michael Douglas) needs someone dropped into Germany to spy~ADD to the suspense she is Jewish~ GREAT thriller and a love story too~ Attractive secretary (Griffith) falls for handsome but elusive and secretive BOSS (Douglas) she is convinced he is a SPY~ suddenly he dumps her and she is busy monitoring his moves as he secretly travels around the world by his "code name"~ when HE reluctantly becomes involved with her again~ she persuades him into allowing HER into Germany to get secret information from the Germans~ but she has her OWN secret agenda she is looking for her cousin JEWISH Cousin Sophie who is rumored still alive HIDING in Germany~ ADD Liam ... My Favorite WWII Story
Shining through combines history, pathos, intrigue and an incredible love story to form a compelling WWII movie. It is truly spellbinding. I have watched it 5 times and will do so again. Don't miss this incredible movie.
