Well Beneath Planet of the Apes
With the shocking ending of the first Apes movie, Taylor ( Charlton Heston) rides past the sunken icon of the Statue of Liberty that has brought him to his knees, along with his sexy mute woman Nova ( Linda Harrison) both fade into the desert on their horse. Beneath the Planet of the Apes takes us further into the Forbidden Zone and leads us into another chapter. A crashed space ship with two men, one dying the other desperate, converse at their situation of hopelessness when one of the astronauts die leaving Brent (James Franciscus) to fend for himself. Hearing a horse neigh, Brent then spots Nova riding on horse back by herself, wandering, as Brent flags her down to gain her attention, he then notices a dog tag around the young woman's neck, and is shocked too see that it has Taylor's ... After taken refugee in the home of the two apes Zira ( Kim Hunter) & Cornelius who helped Taylor escape into the Forbidden Zone, the two apes help Brent and Nova, Brent & Nova set out to try and find Taylor. As Beneath the Planet of the Apes progresses, a Gorilla invasion of the Apes Army of the Forbidden Zone led by General Ursus ( James Gregory) and Dr. Zauis (Maurice Evans) begin to take place after a council of war is declared. After a brief capture in Ape City and with the help of Zira again, Brent and Nova escape and ride off in to the the Forbidden Zone, in direction that was Taylor's disappearence. Brents Horror of reality takes a turn of insanity, for he finds out the ruins of the once great city he has stumbled into was once New York City. Now inhabited by a race of faceless beings that worship not only an atomic bomb as their God, but a Dooms Day Bomb, that can vaporize the entire earth. Beneath the Planet of the Apes opened nation wide in April 1970 to many mixed reviews. The Movie was budgeted on a slim 2 million dollar budget. Veteran TV director Ted Post directed, Beneath, and after almost dropping out of the scene because of budget woes, Post talked Charlton Heston in reprising his role as Taylor, who did not want to do a sequel. But because of favors of 20th Century Fox executives in 1966 who helped make the first Planet of the Apes a reality, Heston did agree to reprise his role as Taylor and donated his salary to some charity from his work in Beneath the Planet of the Apes. Just for Nostalgic tibet, it was Charlton Heston's idea for himself to fall on the Dooms Day Bomb at the end of Beneath, & Fox executives thought the idea was great, all Heston wanted to do was place an end to any more sequels. HOW WRONG HE WAS!! For a year later, Escape From the Planet of the Apes was released and had much better reviews! P.S. there is a minute of additional film footage added, the original film was 93 minutes, the remastered version has the footage,it's a few more scenes towards the end with Taylor and Brent sneaking around the bomb. Solid, Original Idea for the first Apes Sequel!
Beneath the Planet of the Apes picks up right where the original left off. Much of the same atmosphere is present in this sequel, but there are some new and unique elements as well (the surviving humans are mutant telepaths, and their "religion" is interesting, to say the least). While this isn't a perfect movie, and there are some elements that are briefly almost annoying, it is still a good movie and one that gets better with repeated viewings.Beneath the Planet of the Apes picks up right where the original left off. Much of the same atmosphere is present in this sequel, but there are some new and unique elements as well (the surviving humans are mutant telepaths, and their "religion" is interesting, to say the least). While this isn't a perfect movie, and there are some elements that are briefly almost annoying, it is still a good movie and one that gets better with repeated viewings.
