Ce voyage est destin relier les voyages de Sir Richard Burton et John Hanning Speke en Afrique de l'Est avec celles de Heinrich Barth dans les rgions du Sahara et du Tchad. Le voyage commence Zanzibar sur la cte est, et passe travers le lac Victoria, le lac Tchad, Agadez, Tombouctou, Djenn et Sgou St Louis dans le jour moderne Sngal sur la cte ouest. Le livre dcrit les multiples et dangereuses aventures que vont vivre les trois hommes.
