EXCELLENT value for a mirrorless, especially for existing Canon shooters
Now in 2016, mirrorless camera systems are plentiful and choosing one from the many models is similar to choosing a car. There's obviously many reasons to go with any of the very capable systems, including micro 4/3 Fuji/Olympus/Panasonic/Samsung with their long existing line of cameras and lenses with hip retro stylings and fancy features. Or Nikon's take with a very small body (and sensor) and portable system (but lacking lenses). Sony does theirs with APS sized larger sensors and has a range of lenses to boot. So why the Canon M series at all, especially surprisingly, it's Canon that's the underdog this time around? Here are my reasons and they make me happy: 1) If you're already invested in the Canon system, a mirrorless (i.e. very portable) camera that can use all existing Canon ... Now in 2016, mirrorless camera systems are plentiful and choosing one from the many models is similar to choosing a car. So why the Canon M series at all, especially surprisingly, it's Canon that's the underdog this time around? Here are my reasons and they make me happy: 1) If you're already invested in the Canon system, a mirrorless (i.e. very portable) camera that can use all existing Canon lenses (EF, EF-S) is a huge highlight. The M line of lenses (EF-M) are wonderful for their extreme quiet and fast focusing as well as portability. But when it comes to selection, you can't beat the hundreds of Canon and third party AF lenses available (and manual lenses too if that's your thing). All you need is a $20-30 EF/EF-S to EF-M adapter and the world is your oyster. This adapter needs no optics so your image quality isn't effected (make sure to get the adapter with electronic contacts though so you retain AF). I upgraded my back up Rebel for the M2 and it's done wonders for me, even outside of work when I just need a small camera to lug around. 2) It's a very small camera but you're getting lots. Even though it’s smaller than even some M4/3 cameras and definitely most Sony NEX cameras, each M camera (M, M2, M3, M10) is quite like a shrunk down version of an existing Rebel/X00D DSLR. Although they might not have every single thing from the larger brothers (I don’t notice any missing features but the M line does have a different focusing system since it doesn’t have a shutter box), they use the same sensors so you know the image quality is the usual Canon goodness. Like most mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras and DSLRs today, they offer more features and functionalities than needed by most. It can even attach Canon Speedlites and use Canon’s wireless flash system. 3) Last big, very big, pro for me is the price. It is cheap, very cheap. I got the M2 at around $165US new and I wasn’t even looking for the cheapest deal. The original M can be had for much less and the newer M100 and M3 aren’t unreasonably or significantly more, considering they’re new and what you get. In fact, it’s so cheap I would recommend the M line to anyone looking for a DSLR for casual shooting. It’s cheap and small so you wouldn’t mind bringing it out frequently and when you feel like there might be danger of losing/damaging your fancy new camera. Even their lenses are very affordable. The standard 18-55 IS STM zoom lens sits just below $100US (similar to its DSLR bro) and the awesome 22mm F2 pancake lens is well below $200US. You get this extreme low pricing just because Canon decided to release this to very limited markets and honestly, they chose not to do any marketing with the M line. With all the pluses, the M line is a no brainer for me. But there are some note that might be useful: 1) focusing with EF-M native lenses are fast (and tapping where you want to focus on with the touch screen is a breath of fresh air coming from years of back button focusing and recomposing), but focusing with EF/EF-S lenses can be hit and miss. For some pro level lenses (even the 85 F1.2 with focus by wire), it’s quite fast still, but occasionally, it’ll think it has locked focus but it’s not even close. A Tamron 24-70 F2.8 VC, on the other hand, has some strange behavior in which it jumps all over the place and can’t acquire focus. A firmware update perhaps? Note that the original M is supposed to have a slower focusing system and the M3, a faster one. Overall, very usable focusing system, but like its size and prosumer GUI, can be lacking for pro work (certainly as expected). 2) because the camera wasn’t released in many markets, it’ll be difficult for you to find firmware/software/manual unless you speak another language or know where to look. The Hong Kong Canon website did it for me since it has English and did carry some of the M cameras. For the M2 specifically, it also doesn’t have any firmware updates since release. Canon really didn’t spend too much resources to this line. 3) Just a note that if you’re looking to use older manual lenses, most mirrorless would do since all mirrorless systems employ closer lens to sensor registration distance, allowing many adapters without any optics to be used. So in conclusion, if you partial to Canon (either with existing lenses or like the brand) and are looking for a smaller camera with options to change lenses or you’re just looking for camera to start, the M line is a key candidate. If cost isn’t a factor and you prefer the other brands around, shop till you drop on our favorite auction site :-)
