Scarier than #1
The Sadie Novak series continues with DEVIL MAY RIDE. While the first book could be considered a cosy mystery (despite the graphic descriptions of forensic clean-up), this one is scarier. Instead of the ghosts of innocent murder victims who just want to be laid to rest, Sadie encounters demonic ghosts and live demon-worshipping bikers. Not to mention a dead goat (ewww), and the ghost of a vicious guard dog. Don't expect satisfying romance, either. Sadie has two possible love interests in this book, but both turn out to be disappointments. The writing is excellent, but all sorts of terrifying and depressing things happen to Sadie. What's not to love about a paranormal mystery wherein the heroine has a secure grip on her priorities in life? "Cool is…winning an eBay bid," exclaims Sadie. "Cool is not -- I repeat, NOT -- finding a vandalized meth house with a drug addict's rendition of Baphomet in a closet!" Thanks for clearing that up, Sadie. This is the second in the nominally cozy (except for the gory descriptions of forensic clean-up scenes) new Ghost Dusters series, and I liked it just as much as the first one. (Both made me cry with their sentimental closing scenes, but my husband remained dry-eyed.) Sadie's brother's suicide six years earlier was her impetus for getting into the forensic clean-up business. She found her brother's body several days after he killed himself and doesn't want anybody to have to ... However, it does make it tricky to hire employees. It doesn't get much more blood-and-guts than the forensic cleaning business, and having a boss who sees ghosts is more than she wants them to know. That's the basic premise as set forth in "The Remains of the Dead", the first Ghost Dusters Mystery. This time around, Sadie is helping a fellow forensic clean-up specialist by taking over some of the meth-lab makeovers that are his company's usual bailiwick. Unfortunately, she and her main employee (and potential love interest), Zack, are engaged in one of these hazardous chemical clean-up jobs when they stumble over evidence of a chilling cult ritual, complete with live baby and dead goat. Sadie also encounters an evil spirit like none she's ever met before. It's no coincidence that a depleted hoard of stolen cash turns up at her next crime scene, just in time to convince a fearsome motorcycle gang that Sadie made off with their money. Satanic rituals, hell-raising bikers -- where will it end? Not until Sadie puts the threads together and discovers that they are tied to dark secrets in her very own family. "Devil May Ride" is as well written as "The Remains of the Dead", which means very well written indeed. The characters and plot are both satisfying complex and the action, well paced. And if you're welling to go along with the paranormal aspects, it's all pretty believable. I'm not always a big fan of those elements in my mystery series, but it works well in this one. And Sadie is likable enough, and her fellow characters enjoyable enough, that I am happy to willingly suspend any disbelief (because, you know, just maybe…). There's even a third book out in the series now, "Dead and Kicking", so if you like "Devil May Ride" then you've got two more treats in store. Thank you for reading my review.
