About this product

Product Information

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER * A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK While reporting a story from India, New York journalist Patrick Wallingford inadvertently becomes his own headline when his left hand is eaten by a lion. In Boston, a renowned surgeon eagerly awaits the opportunity to perform the nation's first hand transplant. But what if the donor's widow demands visitation rights with the hand? In answering this unexpected question, John Irving has written a novel that is by turns brilliantly comic and emotionally moving, offering a penetrating look at the power of second chances and the will to change. Praise for The Fourth Hand "A rich and deeply moving tale . . . Vintage Irving: a story of two very disparate people, and the strange and unexpected ways we grow . . . Irving's novels are perceptive and precise reflections of the world around us." -- The Washington Post Book World "A blend of sexual farce, journalistic satire, and tender love story . . . From what at first seems bizarre, Irving builds the best kind of love story: an improbable one. Wallingford gets more than a transplanted hand; he begins to find his soul." -- USA Today "A riveting entertainment and certainly one of the funniest novels of the year. The authoritative control of Irving's storytelling has never been more impressive. . . . The delighted reader is powerless to look away." -- Chicago Sun-Times "[A] thoroughly satisfying literary experience . . . Irving's most compassionate and redemptive [novel] to date . . . [His] mastery of characterization is unequaled in American novelists of the day." -- St. Louis Post-Dispatch "A beautiful story about the redemptive power of love." -- The Denver Post

Product is 95% alike picture but a little more blurry. Controller play well but had a notice from psn that my joypad wasn't authentic and could by problematic🤷‍♂️ no trouble so far! Shipping was fast but no tracking and worst packaging ever.. like the box came banged up... send a question to seller never had a reply 😅.... Good product overall, excellent price, fast shipping, wrapped only on 4 sides out of 6, no tracking and never reply... 4★ product / 2★ seller ✌️

The book is in perfect condition, brand new, and is exactly as described. This item is difficult to find here, and the seller priced it very reasonably. It shipped from the UK to Canada, and unfortunately took a little longer to arrive than the seller hoped, but it was shipped less than 24 hours after I purchased. When I contacted the seller, they were very responsive and helpful. I would not hesitate to purchase from this seller again. Definitely recommend!

  • Much Ado about Nothing

I usually read the first few pages before I buy a book. But this is John Irving, I reasoned fondling the cover, the writer of A Prayer for Owen Meany. How bad could it be? Well, not exactly bad, but certainly not good, either. The plot arc is interesting enough: A news reporter has his hand bitten off on camera and has a hand transplant, the hand has a personality of its own, the donor's wife wants to have a child by it. Then it gets strange. I would love to have seen how Stephen King or Dean Koontz would have developed the same plot, but alas John Irving beat them to it. Since it was a summer read, I didn't mind the investment, but at any other time I wish the book had spontaneously combusted.
