First Gear 1/34 scale diecast model 1952 GMC COE box van in Lionel colors and logo
This is strictly a souvenir item, Lionel Corporation was founded in 1900 and produced toy electric trains until sold off in 1969. They did not operate trucks with a company logo such as this widely-produced First Gear 1/34 scale model. In the mid-1990’s First Gear produced a series of truck models from China in 1/34 scale representing common medium and heavy-duty trucks from the 1950’s. About a dozen different trucks were modeled and issued in a huge variety of colors and logos, some representing historical companies and truck lines and some as non-historically accurate souvenir or promotional items. The straight truck box van model is probably the least interesting, the van body has no opening doors or attached fittings. In 1947 the GMC COE (cab over engine) line was redesigned into ... In 1947 the GMC COE (cab over engine) line was redesigned into the “Advanced Design” cab which featured a roomier and improved cab with a new “bumper bar” grille of four heavy horizontal bars surrounded by a heavy frame. This attractive truck design remained through 1959 when the notorious F-series (“Crackerbox”) lightweight fully tilting cab was introduced. The 1947-59 COE was a steel non-tilting cab where the engine was serviced from a short bulbous hood or by removal of a doghouse enclosure inside the cab. The First Gear model is well done except for as common to all the 1/34 scale First Gear trucks the steel disk wheels are not as detailed as they could be. The wheel hubs are molded the same color, the lug nuts are not distinct, and the ventilation holes are not cut out or at least painted black for contrast. The chrome plated steel wheels are the most inaccurate, chrome plated or polished aluminum wheels were very rare in the 1950's and never on a common fleet truck.
