Synopsis
A carjacker lurking in a shopping mall parking lot. An abusive husband pounding on the door. A disgruntled employee brandishing a gun. These days, no one is safe from the specter of violence. But according to Gavin de Becker, everyone can feel safer, act safer, be safer -- if they learn how to listen to their own sixth sense about danger. De Becker has made a career of protecting people and predicting violent behavior. His firm handles security for many of Hollywood's top celebrities -- Madonna, Michael J. Fox, Geena Davis, Brooke Shields, and John Travolta, among others, according to press reports -- and his computerized risk-assessment system helps analyze threats to members of Congress and the Supreme Court. Now, in this unprecedented guide, de Becker shares his expertise with everyone. Covering all the dangerous situations people typically face -- street crime, domestic abuse, violence in the workplace -- de Becker provides real-life examples and offers specific advice on restraining orders, self-defense, and more. But the key to self-protection, he demonstrates, is learning how to trust -- and act on -- our own intuitions. For everyone who's ever felt threatened, this book is essential reading., A stranger in a deserted parking lot offers to help carry a woman's groceries. Is he a good Samaritan, or does he have an ulterior motive? A fired employee says, "You'll be sorry." Will he return with a gun? A man tells a woman after their first date that it is their "destiny" to be married. What will he do when she won't see him again? A mother has an uneasy feeling about the new many she's hired. Should he stay home from work today? No one is guaranteed safety from violence these days. But we can protect ourselves, by learning to trust-and act on-our own sixth sense about danger. Great book

Every woman should read this book, even young girls should read it. I bought this book for a gift but was a little disappointed when I got it because whoever had owned it before had written in it. I'm still giving it away but not as a Christmas gift. This book teaches girls and women how to protect themselves and what signals to look for. It teaches to trust ourselves in our instincts. I highly recommend this book and also Gaven De Becker's other books including "protecting the gift" about protecting our children.

    Words flow easily

I haven't finished reading (the reason for 3 stars). So far I like it. The beginning held my attention, didn't want to put it down. Reading different authors helps to keep the sparks flying in the brain as we use/arrange words differently and that in turn helps in having a better understanding of others and their voices.

  • Amazing book. Reads like a novel.

This book is amazing. I have worked in the security field for years and have knowledge of many things, but this book examines incidents and prediction of them in a concise and straight- forward style. Very informative. Should be required reading for women of all ages or people working in the security area.

  • trust your gut! it is better to offend an innocent person rather than fall victim to an evil perpetrator.

I first read this book over 20years ago. It was excellent then. I reread it every few years. Now I am purchasing copies to give away. the content is even more relevant today than it was 20 years ago.

some great takeaways here. you'll be surprised how well this reinforces things you may not realize that you already know. an easily digestible set of ways to protect you and yours. and some bull crap in the appendice about trigger locks.
