All the while, Holly is there by Kit's side, to witness the senseless crimes and ponder her uncertain future.BADLANDS is told from the point-of-view of the naive Holly, whose childish musings make the cold, detached killings seem all the more shocking. Good acting by a young Martin Sheen and Sissy Specek
Good movie. The character Kit was just straight up crazy and Holly eventually went along with everything he did. Reminded me of the true story I remember about Charlie Starkweather and his girlfriend when I was a kid.

I'd always heard this as a masterpiece, but found it kind of a dragged our bore. Not terrible, just kind of pointless & meandering, ultimately saying (in my opinion) nothing. Acting fine, cinematography pretty good, but no gigantic masterpiece. I find Mallick SUPER-OVERRATED

Under "Detailed item info" above, in the "Movie Description" section's 2nd paragraph, the statement "Malick's truly distinctive style, which combines lush photography and dreamy voiceover with bleak subject matter, has made him one of the world's most revered directors." should be updated to include his masterful choice of ultimately appropriate scene-enhancing music! The comment "Soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1" makes one hope the DVD contains a bonus separate audio soundtrack - well, it does not - which the producers could have probably fit on the disk (I would have otherwise rated this Excellent). Unfortunately, there never was a soundtrack album produced for the Terrence Malick 1973 movie "Badlands", which lists at the top of its music credits* "Musica Poetica - Carl Orff & ... In addition to "Gassenhauer" (Street Song), the haunting main theme bookending the movie and throughout, at least 5 other "Badlands" pieces can, however, be found on this 1994 BMG release 09026 68031 2 (RCA Victor Red Seal) 6-CD box set version of the original Orff/Keetman recordings done between 1963 & 1975 on 10 LPs. The others I have found are: for Dad's dog lesson - "Musik zu einem Puppenspiel" (Music for a puppet play); for Kit's stockyard job - "Xylophonstucke" (Xylophone pieces); for the burning house - "Passion"; for the bounty hunters' just deserts - "Die grauen Weiber" (The grey hags) - the latter's middle quiet passage accompanied only by the witches' whispers enhanced in the movie with some frenetic violin music to effectively heighten the action; and, for the helicopter take-off - "Mariae Geburt" (The Birth of the Virgin Mary). * Here's the "full" soundtrack details from the movie's credits for Badlands: "Musica Poetica" by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman "Trois Morceaux en forme de Poire" by Erik Satie Theme "Migration" by James Taylor "A BLOSSOM FELL" Written by H. If you have not seen it, watch it not only for the great music, but also for the knockout cameo scenes with Dennis Hopper, Christopher Walken, Brad Pitt, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman, Tom Sizemore, Chris Penn, and James Gandolfini (6 years before his similar Tony Soprano), not to mention the strong leading & supporting performances by Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Michael Rapaport, Conchata Ferrell, Saul Rubinek, and Bronson Pinchot.

Badlands - Badness, Gone Good, Gone Weird?
I got 'Badlands' with Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek because the Director of 'Near Dark' praised it on the Special Features disk of that movie. Overall, I'd say it's a 'head-scratcher.' Sheen's character is based on Charles Starkweather, an infamous 'spree' killer from the late 1950's. Spacek's character is based on his stupid (right word), underage girlfriend. I call it a 'head-scratcher,' because at the end, we're almost led to believe there's some likeable spark in each - Sheen for his charm, Spacek for her naivete. I get the sense all the madness could be chalked up to some kids simply acting out against their screwed up elders. There are repeated references to how 'Kit' (Sheen) looks like James Dean - and though half the characters DO question idolizing him, they're the old folks. The ... In the REAL Starkweather case, if I recall, Charles Starkweather himself was the ONLY one who thought he was anything like James Dean. His crimes were also toned DOWN in this movie, because he WOULD be too unlikeable if they had shown all he really did. In my opinion - 'Badlands' is money well spent, IF it's viewed in comparison with 'Natural Born Killers,' 'True Romance,' 'Kalifornia,' and 'Starkweather,' - all based on the same story. Throw in a Discovery Channel bit on Starweather, too. 'NBK' seemed to make the both the crimes and the justifications worse - taking the whole thing to comic book land. 'True Romance' made the justifications WORSE and the crimes LESS - making the characters heroic. 'Kalifornia' threw in a 'normal' couple to tag along for the ride. Of all the movies based on this same story, 'Starkweather,' the movie, seems the most accurate portrait of the real life killer couple - it DOES NOT leave one with ANY fond feelings for them at ALL. 'Badlands' is a strange 50/50 mix of both. The acting in 'Badlands' is certainly good. Spacek is BELIEVABLE, which is saying a lot when the real girl was beyond belief. Sheen's acting is really a GREAT portrayal of a narcissistic nutjob. I like the way he 'gives' people things like their own broken appliances, garbage, and stolen chickens in 'slick' attempts to seem nice. 'Badlands' doesn't TOTALLY idolize Charles Starkweather and his girlfriend, but it DOES imply that young people MIGHT, hinting at some profound esoteric reason for what they did. That's my only complaint. Of all the movies about this story, only 'Starkweather' DOESN'T make up these justifications, and it's so much more profound because of that. I recommend 'Badlands,' - but I recommend throwing on 'Starkweather' right afterwards.

Terrence Malick is, like Stanley Kubrick, one of those extremely rare American filmmakers who consistently makes profound, artistic and moving films and somehow receives support from the mind-mumb Hollywood financial machine. With BADLANDS, his first film, Malick neither slavishly ties himself to the real biographical details of spree-killer Starkweather's story nor romanticizes them, nor does he pander to a lurid cheapness of imagination that would fill the screen with "shocking" violence (see "Natural Born Killers" for that type of shallow schlock.) instead, Malick uses the tale as a disconcertingly fitting platform for deep philosophical meditations, spoken with a simultaneously moving and chilling simplicity in voiceover by the phenomenal Sissy Spacek. Anyone ... Terrence Malick is, like Stanley Kubrick, one of those extremely rare American filmmakers who consistently makes profound, artistic and moving films and somehow receives support from the mind-mumb Hollywood financial machine.
